I'm coming over to Riyadh for work soon from the UK.
I have two choices in relation to me wanting to purchase an iphone 5.
1. I can buy one in London (in London, it costs SAR 3180) offline. Once i get to Riyadh, simply get a contract with no phone as I would already have the iphone 5 bought from London.
2. Wait until i get to Riyadh. In Riyadh purchase a contract that comes with an iphone 5.
In your esteemed local know-how, what would be the better choice?

iPhone 5 officialy not released in KSA though it is available with high price tag. Prices will be high at launch due to demand. You best option is to buy from UK and get a local sim. Nano sims are available in KSA.

in the UK, we have, for example, a good country-wide chain called Carephone Warehouse, which is very reliable and reasonable on it's prices for mobile phones and contracts.
would any of you be able to advise the name of similar chain of reliable mobile phone specialists in Riyadh please?

Jarir book store is mostly recommended. It is book store but you can buy all kind of smart phones, gadgets and computers.

Jarir book store is way over priced I'd recommend Carefour or a contract with any service provider.

People are doing under ground business by purchasing these gadgets from UK and selling it at a reasonably high price for a profit. I know many of my friends who are into this business. The bottom line is, get an iPhone from UK nod get a nano sim from Riyadh. Never buy it from here as it will be sky high price.

Just to let you know that the launch price of iphone 5 (16 GB without 4G)will be 4499 SAR..

whatever you do dont buy a sim free '5' from carphonewarehouse- it is not unlocked. if you want to buy unlocked to work in saudi you need to buy direct from apple

Sim free unlocked iPhone is available from carphonewarehouse. It is same price as apple store.

It's Sim free but not unlocked. As soon as you put a uk sim in it will lock permanently on that carrier. If you bring a carphonewarehouse iPhone 5 to Saudi it will ask for an activation code. There is small print on their website advising of this. The only place to get an unlocked iPhone 5 is from apple

Its still expensive in Riyadh, if you don't care about warranty get it from London. In riyadh 64 GB is 5500 SR+ at the moment.
