Bringing Pets to Libya

We're coming from the US.  Probably should have mentioned that before.

A couple of my co-workers have brought in dogs, but that was a couple years ago (so not sure if anything has changed).  The dogs were inspected by the vet at the airport (the vet didn't want to touch them, basically checked to see if they were alive).  There was no quarantine period.  Probably a safe bet to get all the necessary shots (say for bringing a dog to the USA or E.U.). 

Importing a dog seems to be one of the easy things to do in Libya...

Your pet has to get the injection for Rabies.

Don't beleive what you hear, nothing is easy to get done in Libya.

The easiest and less stressful way of bringing a pet into Libya is to let a professional vet/animal shipping specialist handle it.

In addition to the "Pets Passport", a full translation of this into Arabic is required, plus all of the other docs.

You can try doing it all yourself but you'll end up blowing a blood vessel with all the BS involved, and try doing it when you're in Libya and the dog's still back home....

Just to give an idea of the costs, bringing a medium sized dog from the UK to Libya is around £1,500

You can get decent dogs in Libya, but without papers you'll never be able to export the animal again.

We brought our 5 year old Border Collie called Megan, appart from being a bit thirsty she was ok, we flew her from Wales in the UK, so not as far as you guys, she has adjusted well, but be warned the Libyans are very scared of dogs, also shop around, the original quote we got was £1200, then they said they could not dom it, so we got another firm that done it for £600, and it was hassle free, she arrived on time and in good health

Has anyone flown in their pets from a country as far as South Africa?  I don't want my pets to die of thirst!

I have just moved to Tripoli this august and we came in from Italy via Tunisia. The dog came across the border with my husband in our car and dogs documents were thoroughly checked, they had been translated into arabic in Tunis. The cat came across via air and no check was done on her or her documents,also translated in Tunis.
Best to get documents translated to avoid possible situations.

There have been a few cases recently of dogs being stolen from expats and being sold at the pet market in Tripoli.

yes that's true but can be happen everywhere

Our Persian cat got stolen from outside the house within minutes of the poor bugger straying outside the gate.

NOTE: as of approximately 1 April, Libya changed its pet policy.  Airports seem to be aware of this policy, but veterinarians (and possibly some Libyan embassies) were not notified in advance about it.  Dr. Jalal of ElmaharyVet (I see he has posted on this site and I know him personally to be a reputable and dependable vet) informed me that some pets have been denied airline boarding to come to Libya. Visit my website for updates as they come in.
  But generally speaking, it is no more difficult and no more expensive to import/export a pet to/from Libyan than to most other countries.  The problems usually arise from the occasional lack of consistent application of the requirements.  Sometimes the airport personnel don't understand the rules.  Sometimes you may receive conflicting information from official sources who should know the correct procedures.  But it can all be worked out.  I imported 4 cats. Yikes!  And took them out with me.  And exported a Libyan rescue dog.  No problems at all.

I was told Muslims have to wash 7 times if they touch a dog. I am shocked they would let them into the country.
is it the same cost to bring a cat to Libya?
