My son is coming soon and he is asking me about one of these fair fx cards are they ok ?

Do you mean a pre-loaded fx debit card similar to Caxton FX card?

If so, I have used one in the past. The card is pre-loaded with the currency of your choice at a fairly reasonable rate of exchange. I carried it as an emergency fund.

However this is by no means as good as changing CASH in Thailand at a place like Super Rich in Bangkok for example. I appreciate the security element of carrying a large wad of cash so perhaps a combination of an Fx card and cash would be a good idea.

Also consider a credit card for emergency use along with good travel insurance that includes emergency repatriation.
