Tropical gardening

Hi,
I'm approaching retirement, presently in Florida, and I see Ecuador has expats in Cuenca and Quito (where it is a bit chilly by my tastes) and on the coast.

I wonder if there is anywhere reasonably popular with expats where it is possible to grow tropical plants (especially trees) in your garden without needing a greenhouse. And yet not entirely hours away from civilization?

Hi FloridianGal!

Welcome to Expat.com!

Hi Floridian Girl,   We spent 3 months in Ecuador along the coastal regions.   There are tropical plants growing in many peoples yards all along the coast.   We are heading back in about 1 month to set up house.  We plan to live near Bahia, or Jama area.   The entire coast is warm and tropical.  It is dryer from Manta down to Salinas, and gets more humid farther up north.     There are expats all along the coast,  (not as many in groups as in Cuenca or Quito).   We saw several in Manta and Bahia.

I live in Quito and there are numerous palm trees and Sago palms.
