General Motors has just announced it is closing
its manufacturing plant in Colombia, with the
dismantling to begin straight away.
GM also announced it will close its Ecuador
plant starting in August (2024).
The closings will apparently cost over 1,000 GM workers
their jobs in the two countries .. in addition to thousands
of non-GM workers who have supported GM production
and services but whose labor will no longer be necessary,
at least not now.
The GM release had some curious commentary,
saying the company will continue to support customers
through the Chevrolet brand (whatever that means)
and indicating the closings will clear the way for
future production of GM vehicles (when is unclear).
