Hair Salons specializing in Black Hair

My husband and I are planning to move to the Philippines in a year or so, but I am afraid that we won't be able to get our hair done there.  Does anyone know of any salons that specialize in Black hair care??

We both have Loc's

An interesting post but absurd. Would that be like me going to the mechanic to ask if he can change the oil? Buying an ice cream sundae without wafers.

Do your research, even here in a back water province in La Union my salon does dreads, specialized shaving etc. Might be a third world country but when it comes to hair and body care the Philippines outruns first world countries. I know been here a long time and see.

You should be more worried about a prospective move.

@bigpearl

A bit harsh my friend. If a person's experience in their own country has led them to find terrible do's (as in hairdo's) they'll most assuredly have some worry in a country with less than .02% ethnic blacks. Hair is not hair in some circles. I can only go by what black friends in the states would cry about when having a hard time finding good hair work. I'm just saying, some folks are particular and have had bad experiences and as such worry. Now if you run a "chrome dome" I wouldn't expect you to understand that. But think outside the box a little my friend.

I for one am absolutely not impressed with the salons in SM Seaside or Robinsons mall near Radisson Blue un Cebu City. I am picky about my hair, even at 64. I have an awesome head of hair and I like it cut a certain way. I explain that before proceeding. The last one, was in SM Seaside at what looked like a nice upscale salon. Let me just say that is the first time in 40 years or more I have ever yelled at a barber/stylist and left disgusted. She really paid ZERO attention to what I asked and screwed up.

@ Larry Fisher

I have a (what I consider a vain better half) He uses products in his hair and hair spray before he goes out. (can't have the har move) Visits a P600 salon while I'm more than happy with my 100 peso salon. Comes home after his visit to the/his salon and looks no different to me, I love him and not his bl@@dy hair style but he is egotistical and the vanity left in the bathroom with his hair spray, I care little, tells me to have a shave all the time.

As for the OP there was a post on this subject some years ago and perhaps they can search there or use my best friend google.

Not being harsh Larry but the old saying? "God helps those that help themselves" as I have always done.

New car? Shop around.

To the OP I can't recommend a salon that deals with as you say locs. Research and boots on the ground.

With bigpearl  the #1 person on the welcome wagon I'm surprised by his response.

I agree with you Larry.

Surprised or no Bob simple reality. Read the OP and digest.

I read the post and it seemed quite reasonable for future Expats to asked.

I digested your post and Barfed.

Your car is a Lamborghini. You gonna take it to some motocab mechanic for an oil change? I highly doubt it. I won't comment further so as to not stir up a storm. But you said "absurd". And I think that is probably what stood out the most. And it seems far from your norm as well.

Regards,

Larry

Their post not mine Bob. A bit like asking where to get the best expresso in PH. Suppose it depends on where you put your roots down, Salon or coffee shop. Aloof post? Where to buy the best slippers or where the hell am I going to live, oh near the hair dresser that knows how to deal with dreads as well as black hair and can find a decent coffee.

Only an observation on the OP's post.

When I first came here 13 years ago I wanted to know the best and cheapest place to buy Jack Daniels, had to leave that to my local buyer (employee) as I was too busy working, now? Found all the best places at the cheapest prices. Boots on the ground. Nothing profound nor out of your league Bob, but read and read well, barfed means you didn't read.

Cheers, Steve.

Absurd or not Larry Read the OP. I'm sure there are more important things to worry about and if memory serves me right the OP has posted on moving here but never a mention of a haircut, only about a 14 year old grand daughter, 11 kids and how to move here,

Call me cynical or realistic, I care little but I know what I see and have a very good memory. Old timers on occasion but generally most of what I read sticks.

I will send the OP to my barber and sure they will sort her/him out quick time.

Cheers, Steve.

I think one thing that is of abundant resource in the Philippines is creativity. We were visiting the Philippines in February. My wife went to get her hair color done in Quezon City. They call the hair color service Brazilian <something>. Once we were back in the US in March, she got a lot compliments about her hair when she went back to work. All I know about hair color is how much it cost and how long I waited for them to finish. It cost a lot less than getting her hair color done in the US.

@ladyskinner That's a good question (despite what @bigpearl thinks). Good news is that there are several salons that actually specialize in dreadlocks (many run by black expats) in the cities. Bad news is that there isn't much of the same in the provinces (they can do braids, but not locks). So, it depends on which part of the country that you're going to. Try looking on Facebook Marketplace. It is a resource that the locals use quite often to buy/sell goods/services.

Needless to say, I agree with @Larry Fisher and @Enzyte Bob that @bigpearl was a bit harsh. Unwittingly or intentionally, only she can answer that. I just hope that my post is actually helpful to you. Best of luck to you and your hubby!

Welcome to the forum from me, apparently I'm the #1 welcomer it seems according to some. Never saw any one else welcome you and I hope you enjoy the forum.

Regardless and to this post, opinions are like noses and in an open forum like many countries freedom of speech as long as it's not derogatory. Absurd is not derogatory but an opinion.

bigpearl said. . . .  And for the OP google will be your best friend.

Over recent years I've found Google, if Newton Minnow was still alive, could be described as a vast wasteland.

.

Google has overwhelmed itself, the name Google is a derivative of Googol. It has collected so much relevant  and non relevant information that it doesn't realize which to spiel out when a search is done.

.

Google was launched in 1998, at one time searches were relevant, a precise search got a precise answer, especially when seeking a supplier of a product or service.

.

Prior to the advent of Google, I used the following search engines: Yahoo, Lycos, AltaVista, Excite, Hotbot, Infoseek, Metacrawler and WebCrawler. All founded between 1994 and 1996.

.

I can understand why an Expat or a future Expat would ask a civil question on this forum. They would get an experienced or informed answer. This forum is your best friend when needing an answer about the Philippines.

LOL Bob you sound like Raymond Reddington "Blacklist"

Perhaps that's why we are here on an expat forum to learn? Listen? Appreciate? Contribute? Like we say noses are easy to pick like opinions. As for Google (wait for AI to take over) if I don't find my answer with the first input I redefine my search once or twice and come up trumps,,,,, not the ex president but get my answers/info.

Asking a bunch of retired old fart/s like me with left field questions at most levels will attract responses like mine. We all contribute.

@Larry Fisher

I am not a chrome dome and nothing wrong with that, I also hold a full head of hair at 64 and my salon loves it, always say it's soft and gentle hair and cut as directed, charge P100 but I always give them 150. Have been to the local guy up the road who charges P50 and makes a mess.

I have known several friends with dreads for 30 plus years in Australia and when asked tell me they look after the crop themselves, no need for a salon.

I supplied a salon that deals with dreads, info simply gained with google and I'm sure a further refined search will turn up more opportunities.

Seriously? Just for an opinion from lil ol me?

Besides you and the OP, there are only 4 contributors (so far) to this thread. Not 1...not 2...but 3 out of the 4 contributors had mentioned that your initial post was harsh (at least it wasn't unanimous...I guess)! You say that "absurd is not derogatory but an opinion." Whether you want to believe/admit it or not, it is actually both. You were kind enough to provide a link to the word in the dictionary. I'll return the favor by providing a link to the word in the thesaurus. Actually, because I am a nice guy, I'll save you the trouble by including, in this post, what it actually shows.

absurd

2639.svg synonyms: bizarre, foolish, unreal, insane, fantastical, silly, stupid, foolish, crazy, insane, mad, idiotic, ridiculous, irrational, lunatic

1f642.svg antonyms: reasonable, realistic, wise, sound, sensible, prudent, sane, judicious, clever, intelligent, logical, valid, bright, smart

I'm not sure what your goal was in calling the OP absurd. If you accomplished it, then congrats to you! Being black myself, I can see that it isn't absurd at all. Few travelers are black. Few members of this site are black. It is because of these facts, I clicked on the thread in the first place. None of us have the perfect answers to every question. That's okay. If your best advice is "google it," then you're probably not all that great at giving advice.

You're welcome! I guess we're all teachers this week!

Cheers!

@cjm_mgc

Appreciate your input and candor. Being gay myself I don't put people in boxes, perhaps I should have used the word "ridiculous"?

As for google? I get most of my info there before bothering/asking on an expat site for their opinion/advice.

The Philippines can and is at times difficult to navigate but not insurmountable.

The google link I supplied that for some reason "under review" was one simple search and gave the answer for specialist Dread salons in the Philippines. There were 2. I'm sure there are plenty of others that don't advertise. Boots on the ground helps also.

As for calling the Original post absurd? I said that because the answers can be easily found by searching on the net with addresses.

Perhaps read back all of the OP's submissions, all 3 in the last 7 months?

We are all teachers and students hence open forums. I appreciate what you say and contribute and hope you continue to do so at all levels here.

Cheers, Steve.

***********************************

There are times I google something instead of giving a link (knowing links are always "under review") I give a synopsis of what I read or found and pass it on.

.

You don't need to advertise on Google to have your contents displayed on any subject you have replied to.

.

For the subject of Dread Salons in the Philippines, it is a very narrow field of information, boots on the ground is definitely the best source and Expat.com is it.

.

Pearl you didn't have an answer to the OP question,  suggesting Google is not an answer.

Got 2 answers/sites there Bob, one search and no need for boots on the ground. I suppose you Bob don't use google or other apps?

I think the point has been missed.

Cheers, Steve.

If and when you do relocate to the Philippines I think finding the right hair salon will be the least of your concerns.
