Looking for advice on childcare

Hi,
My husband and I will be moving to Libya with his work in the next 6 months.  I have two small children and by the time I arrive I will have a newborn.  Can someone tell me if is is  easy to get a nanny in Libya, what the process is, average rate of pay and are most live out nannies or live in.  Also, is it east to get an english speaking nanny.  I was also wondering about baby formula...I am assuming I should ship over several months supplies of baby essentials as it is probably hard to get?  Any advice would be welcomed.
Thank you

Hi there. I redirected the thread to the Lybian forum.

Thank you,
Im new at this and Im trying to learn how to post on this site.

Hi there
welcome to Libya , congrats on ur baby i'm expecting my 1st in August :)
well it's easy to find a nanny in Libya , but you have to know we don't have nanny agency or such recruitment service
in this case maybe ur husband's company can help you or you can put an ad in Libyan recruitment website and check the applications by ur self ,it will be more difficult to find a nanny who speaks English but yet there's a lot of Filipino and Ethiopian nannies works for families here in Libya
for live in nanny the pay will be more average to 800L.D
live out round 400 to 600L.D
about the baby formula i advice you to bring your supply and make arrangements for occasion shipments altho we good brands here but even us Libyan moms prefer the imported ones :-)
for any further question I'm here to help

Thank you for replying.  Congradulations to you as well.  Thanks for the advice.  It is hard moving with small children no matter where you are moving too.

Can they be as housemaid and to take care of my small children as well as the home, where I can find them? I prefer Ethiopian. If you know please inform me. thanks in advance.

Just a word of caution on domestic staff:

Many of the nationalities in Libya who expats use for domestic help - nannies, cleaners, gate boys etc. are illegals in Libya who have travelled across the desert with the aim of getting on a boat to Europe.

Most of them don't have any money and many will concoct a merry tale in order to secure a job with an expat family.

In addition, it is illegal for a non-Libyan to employ anyone, whether it's on a casual basis or otherwise.

It may be common sense to many, but just take some time to restrict your exposure to the problems associated with hiring domestic staff:

- Insist on a reference from any previous employers. This should be at the minimum a signed letter.

- If there is a phone number or email address available, use it and speak to the previous employer yourself.

- Insist on seeing the person's passport and take a copy of it. If things go wrong, at least you'll have their details.

- Do not allow domestic staff access to your house unless you absolutely have to. In which case, secure your valuables (passports, money, cards, car keys) in a safe, in a locked room.

- Do not agree to giving cash advances, loans, or give in to requests for any other charitable donations.

- If you have grounds to fire a domestic help, do it immediately. Give them their pay off and escort them off your compound along with any property they may have. Do not procrastinate!

Please remember that by employing an illegal, you have no comebacks if things go wrong.

Good advice Sanman6. Thank you very much.

If it's just a nanny you need it is possible to get them but its generally by word of mouth.  I know other ex-pats that have used the church as a way of getting ghanian nannies.  It's just your luck.  We have found it very difficult to get someone-Arabic or non Arabic speaking.  Many families do have live in house maids/nannies and they are around 600lyd per month. Good luck

Thank you for your help.  I will start making contacts to ensure that we get a head start on a suitable nanny.

Well congrats and good luck
bring formula and lots of it
as far as shipping watch out
i had to wait 45 days to get my formula out of the
cargo shipping dept at the inter. airport
so plan ahead
i put my kids in a playgroup
for most of the day they stay there
i like it because there are children from a lot of different nationalities and the kids have an opportunity to speak english with other adults and kids
there are a few here in TIP
