Healthcare in Cyprus

Hi,

how does the healthcare system work in Cyprus ? Is it efficient ?

What are the main differences between public and private sectors?

Is it recommended to purchase private health insurance in Cyprus?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience !

Julien

Public healthcare in Cyprus is administered by the Ministry of Health and financed by taxes. Expats can receive a state medical card when they register and pay social insurance contributions. A minimum of three years contributions are required for free full state healthcare cover.

If you dont work and are retired on a state pension you can get free state healthcare cover via the form S1

If you dont work and are not on state pension (ie self sufficient) then you must have private healthcare cover, so as to not be a burden on the state. In fact the issue of your yellow slip (Alien Registration Certificate) relies on you providing such evidence

Note that your home country issued EHIC ceases to be valid once you are resident here. Although it could be used for the first three months as emergency healthcare cover... it is not however valid for immigration purposes.
