Moving abroad: UK citizens advised to learn about their destination

Are you looking forward to move abroad? You are advised by the British government to inquire thoroughly about your destination beforehand.

Every year, some 6 million UK citizens head overseas in search of new opportunities, different lifestyles and a sunnier climate, or to spend the rest of their retirement years. But according to British authorities, proper planning is definitely a key issue regarding expatriation. This is why the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, with the collaboration of “A Place in the Sun”, has launched the “Know Before You Go” campaign this Thursday, 23rd of October 2014.

The aim of the campaign is essentially to urge UK expats and retirees to plan there move well in advance so as to avoid all possible hurdles. Recent surveys have revealed that 32% of British nationals have not done adequate research before moving abroad. 10% of them admit having moved mainly for long term financial reasons.

But according to James Duddridge, Minister for Consular Affairs, “Moving abroad can be a wonderful experience, but living somewhere new is very different to your average holiday. It's crucial to think about the future and allow plenty of time to do your research”.

Hence, you are advised to visit the UK government website which contains all information regarding moving abroad. You are likely to find useful advices and tips which will help you determine which is the most appropriate country for you and what are the formalities to be filled in to move there.

Some of the key points to consider are the following:
> Do your homework and research the local laws and customs
> Don't rush into buying abroad, try renting in the area to help you make an informed choice
> Make an effort to be part of the community and learn the language
> Consider your financial requirements – how will the move affect your income, pension and/or benefits
> Read up on tax regulations that may apply in your new home
> Seek independent legal advice from an advisor who understands the law in the country
> Notify the relevant authorities that you're leaving.

For more information, you can check the UK government website or see the video guide available here.

You can also check the Living In guides on the FCO's website if you already know where you would like to settle.

Good luck!  ;)

This is great advice not only for those from the UK moving abroad but for everyone who is planning on becoming an expat.

Here in the DR those that have the most problems are those who did not do the homework and rushed into things.  Not knowing the local laws and customs also has hurt many a new Expat.

I packed my bags, ready to go, left on a jet plane, but forgot to pack a clue about the place I was moving to.
Preparation is fine, but you also need the right attitude.

Everyone should do at least a little homework.

Unless they're running away from angry shepherds.

However if running with baggage you will only find the baggage gets heavier when you arrive.  It follows you everywhere.
