Flying to Nairobi from Portland Oregon with dog as cargo - Help!

Hello,

I was wondering if someone has any advice or experience with flying a dog to Nairobi from the states.
I was told that I could not fly my 55lb dog with me in the cabin, because of Kenya's restrictions. The Kenya Embassy said Kenya would not allow a pet to fly anything but cargo.
The airlines will allow my dog on the plane - but Kenya's restrictions trump the airlines rules.

Has anyone had a positive experience with bring there dog to Kenya from the states, and if so, how did you do it?

We leave April 15th 2013

Thank you

We used a company called Aeropaws.com  Went smooth as silk.

Thanks sblett! Was it expensive? I was quoted $7,000 from another pet re locator...

Wow, that's WAY out of the ballpark...I came from D.C. so had one less leg but here are the quotes I was given for my pooch (a 45lb English Springer Spaniel):

#500     CRATE PER ATTACHED FILE     $1,743
#500E    CRATE WITH 3" EXTENDER      $1,840
#700     CRATE PER ATTACHMENT        $2,119

It depends on what size crate you will need but as you can see, nowhere near the quote you were given.

This was also nearly 2 years ago but I doubt it has gone up that much.  I think this even included a night at a kennel (including transport) in Amsterdam.

Also, this is tax deductible if you are moving for work.

Some additional information from my shippers:

GROUND TRANSPORTATION: Ground transportation to and from the airport is available.  I can quote a price and arrange pickup and delivery.  The minimum charge for pickup or delivery is $150.

(we wish we would have done this on departure-it was a pain to take the dog to cargo departures)

CRATE: Your dog must travel in either of the three crate sizes indicated in the quote above.  Please see the attached file for crate specifications details.  You can order crates and crate kits from Aeropaws on-line at pet store prices.  Shipping is free.  However, if you will be using the extender, you should purchase the Petmate brand #500 at your local pet store.

Airline regulations require a 3" clearance above its head if you plan on using the crate for international trave.  Remember, ninety percent of the airline charges are based on the size of the crate.  The right sized crate means the best price charged for transport. We can squeak by on KLM with 2" but under no circumstances should pet's head touch the top of the crate.

HEALTH DOCUMENTS: The airlines require a "fit to fly" certificate issued 10 days or less before departure.
For International travel, this will be a USDA APHIS 7001 International Health Certificate.  Call your vet to insure they have a supply on hand.  This certificate must be certified by the USDA.

IMPORT DOCUMENTS: The Kenyan Government requires an import permit, payment of the import fee, certain health documents, veterinarian certifications, and a certification by the pilot of the aircraft transporting your dog into Kenya.  I have attached detailed information from the Kenyan web site, however, I will contact the Kenyan embassy by phone to verify that the web site information in complete and accurate.  We can work out these details after you approve the quote.

For your shipment, the USDA government fee is $36 for certification of various documents if this as required by required by the Kenyan Government.
edEx charges to and from the USDA APHIS office in Richmond are $39.00.  Aeropaws can arrange for prepaid envelopes to be sent to you or your vet for sending and receiving these documents.

HOW TO ORDER: I can book this transportation for you with a $100 refundable deposit.  Click here  to order from Aeropaws secure store.

While there, you can order a crate with a crate kit for preparing the crate to airline specifications.  You can also order the extension.  The shipping is free for the crate and kit or extension.  The remaining final charges for this project will be charged 10 days prior to departure and with your approval to the same credit card you use to make the deposit.  Please call or email if you would like to make other arrangements.

This is great information! Thank you

I am also looking into flying into Tanzania and driving to Nairobi.
My dog is a certified/ medically cleared Therapy Dog - so I'm HOPING  that we can fly him in the cabin with us if I fly to Tanzania....I won't get my hopes up though

Kenya does not allow this. As you probably know.

I just sent a request for a quote to the pet re locator you suggested.

Could you tell me about the USDA requirement? And how I could do this myself - if needed?
All the other paperwork - I have finished or I'm in the process of doing so.

Are you still living in Nairobi?

Thank you

I actually have an amazing friend that handled the USDA portion on my behalf as I was traveling when this needed to be processed...I believe it was a matter of just over nighting the form 7001 from the vet to have them certify it (and then you pay them to overnight it back)

It's a pretty orchestrated/time consuming event in the days prior to departure but Bill was fabulous and available day or night through the whole process.

I am still in Nairobi, yes.  Have you been before?  Our dog is very happy here though it seems she never can quite kick the resilient worms we have here.

Hi,

No, I have never been to Nairobi, but I'm excited to get over there! I just hope we can find a safe and affordable way to bring out pet. Our vet asked if we would like to buy a de- wormer for our dog. So maybe I will purchase this : )

Just an FYI, the worms here are different and require different meds.  They are given 2 at a time 10 days apart and repeat every 2 months.  You can get them here cheaply, vet services are also pretty cheap here.
