COVID-19 and expatriation in Cyprus

Hello everybody,

The COVID-19 crisis inevitably impacts Cyprus, between closed airports or periods of containment in some cities or even the entire country .
We would like to hear from you during this unusual period, to find out what the consequences of this pandemic are on your expatriation or expatriation project in Cyprus.

Does the current crisis call into question your long-term expatriation project?
If you are already settled in Cyprus, do you plan to return to your home country?

How are you living through such an uncertain period, especially if you are far from your loved ones?

Have any of you ended your expatriation in Cyprus unexpectedly?

Paradoxically, has this crisis brought you closer to some people?

What are your plans for the future?

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Hope you are doing well.

Loïc.

We are well settled here and have absolutely no intention of ever returning to our homeland.

Yes it is indeed strange and i suspect these times will continue for a long long time. We manage.... Cyprus implemented an initial 8 days of state emergency, then a further 7 days of initial lockdown followed by a deeper lockdown with further restrictions and curfew to control spread of infection (to date 29 days of deeper lockdown)... fines upto €450 per person have been imposed on those who break the decree....  and despite the danger there are still some people gathering and getting caught.(100 -200 per night)

anyway people seem to be getting on with it and doing what they have to for essential shopping, meds, dog walking, excercise etc  the SMS authority mechanism seems to be working well for those who abide by the decree.

We have a special permit to carry out our charity work for the feral cats population to feed trap neuter and release program in our area. Their welfare is just as important.

isolating is a good thing right now and as most people have always done they keep in contact with distant loved ones and friends etc via the various socal media platforms facebook twitter houseparty zoom skype whats app etc  passing the time with family and friends via group meetings playing games quizes dancing lessons etc etc etc  and its working well.

It can be hard not seeing people socially but its something we must do to keep safe and stay healthy and I suspect this event will ultimately change the way society interacts in the years to come.

Lets hope we can all get through this and further hope that we can find a means by which we can control it or eradicate it completely but I think that will take time and at great cost in both lives and money.

#Staysafe #Stayhome # Stayhealthy everyone ... good luck to all.

Hi,

I returned to UK  in March just before the lockdown, my wife who is Cypriot is still in Cyprus where we live, I now want to return to her, (My clothes need ironing) only kidding.....

Anyway I see Wizz Air are starting up again. from Luton to Larnaca, which would be great for me, but I am reluctant to book the flight for June as I havent heard any news regarding when the airports in Larnaca and Paphos are re-opening.

Any one got any insights as to when inbound flights will be allowed back in and if so do you think it will require 14 quarantining, which I wouldnt mind but I would prefer if it was voluntary in my own home there.

Any thoughts would be welcome

Regards

Jake

The latest timeline covid19 road map is on the restrictions thread..

here is the extract

Phase 3: June 9 to July 13
Opening of Shopping Centers / Malls
Opening of Airports/Airlines – gradually and conditionally
Opening of Ports, service and cruise
Opening of catering services, service indoors and outdoors
Opening of Hotels
Opening of Beaches: Condition maintaining a safe distance
Opening of theatres and open-air cinema
Opening of Gyms
Opening of Sports Championships (without fans)
Opening of Summer programs of private and higher education schools
Returning to Normal
Cancellation of all restrictions
Phase 4: from 14 July onwards
Indoor theatres and cinemas
Festivals and Concerts
Casinos
Playgrounds indoors and outdoors
A special plan will be drawn up for the gradual reopening of all the above areas. It is emphasized that the resumption of economic activities will be based on guidelines or protocols, as already mentioned. In particular, for large concentrations, the limit on the number of individuals will be determined at a later stage.

You would be wise to wait - as the relaxation and incoming flights plus use of airports will be selective and will also depend on what happens in other countries with their infections rates etc Please bear in mind that the phased relaxing of restrictions also depends largely on how the public here react to the relaxations.....  if they act irresponsibly the restrictions will be put back in place. with repatriation  flights and quarantine being enforced

Thank you Toon,

yes Ill take your advice and I wont book the flight until there is more clarification next month. Thanks again.

Jake

From what ive seen so far with my own eyes here in the Paphos district people seem to think its ok to just go out as though nothing has happened .... traffic has risen dramatically, more people are meeting  in small groups and seeing distant family in their homes, talking  without maintaining social distancing shopping is fraught with the same distancing problems... if this keeps up over the next 2-3 weeks or increases then we will be back to square one.

Just spotted this which may help you to decide what to do..

The reopening of airports and the resumption of flights is envisioned in stage 3 of the government's lockdown exit roadmap from June 9 to July 13  but  gradually and under conditions.

No details were given when the decision was announced and it is these details that the plan of action will flesh out.

Karousos said that the plan of action will be submitted to cabinet at the end of May.

Among other, it will cover the timing of the opening, the criteria as regards the countries with which air connectivity will be restored and the procedures to be adopted at airports and on airplanes.

“Connectivity is essential for our country and we will draw up a plan of action to restore it gradually,” the minister said.

He said one committee chaired by him will be made up of the Foreign, Finance and Health Ministers and the Deputy Minister of Tourism.

Thats very usefull...thank you  for the info Toon...
