Children integration in a new school in Portugal

Hello everyone,

Moving abroad can be particularly hard on children. For any parent planning a move to Portugal, it is of utmost importance to make sure they do everything in their power to make sure their children's transition is as smooth as possible. Would you be able to give a few tips to parents planning to move to Portugal by answering the following questions on children integration?

What does one need to factor in when choosing a new school for their children in Portugal?

How does one prepare their children for the transition into a new school in Portugal?

How does one help their children integrate into their new school? Any tips to help a child transitioning into a completely different new program or curriculum?

Is there an age period during which a child really should change schools?

What are the signs that a child is having trouble transitioning into their new school?

Tell us how it went for your child in Portugal.

Please share your experience,

Bhavna

Hi.

Did you receive any tips on school transitions? We are looking to move this year and are looking to move our 8 year old son to a local school in Pedrógão Grande?

Thanks
Kate

Hi Doochia, Thanks for your feedback :)

All foreign students have the right to be integrated into the Portuguese education system.

For students whose mother tongue is not Portuguese, specific measures for learning the Portuguese language are included in the school curriculum: In primary and secondary education, the curricula can integrate the subject of Portuguese as a non-Mother Language (PLNM - Português Língua Não Materna) aimed at students whose mother tongue is not Portuguese or who have not had Portuguese as a school language.

How to position students in PLNM level groups:

When a student whose mother tongue is not Portuguese is inserted into the educational system, his/her school should draw up his/her sociolinguistic profile and apply a PLNM diagnostic test to assess his/her knowledge of the Portuguese language. Depending on the information collected and the results obtained in this test, the student is placed in a PLNM proficiency level.
