Creche in Portugal

Hello everyone!

We are a couple from France who have been residing as expatriates outside of Europe for the past 5 years. However, with the exciting news of our baby on the way, we are planning to return to Europe in 2024.

Portugal is currently on our radar as a potential destination, and one of the key factors we are considering is the daycare/creche system. Given our limited knowledge of the day-to-day realities there, we are unsure about what to expect.

Therefore, we are reaching out to the Expat.com community in the hope of hearing about your experiences. Specifically, we would like to know:

- How have you found the daycare/creche system in Portugal?

- Is it easy or difficult to enroll a child in a public daycare?

- Are private options considerably more expensive?

- What are the facilities like?

We would be grateful for any information you can provide regarding the staff, curriculum, and overall environment of the daycares. Also any advice on navigating the system would be immensely helpful!

Moreover, we would love to hear any personal anecdotes about living in Portugal, especially from fellow expatriates or young families. We are eager to gather as much information as possible.

Thank you in advance for your responses!🙏

I am curious to learn why the imminent arrival of a baby makes you want to return from Mauritius to Europe. Is Mauritius not suitable for bringing up children?

Hi Klaxton, Welcome.

In Portugal, public nurseries (pre-school education) are free of charge for all minors aged 4 years old and over.

There is no guarantee of access to public nurseries for babies between 3 months and 3 years of age. You must enroll on a waiting list. You can always opt for private nurseries. Timetables are very flexible and can be adjusted to the parents' timetable. Prices vary depending on the age, the services offered and the competition between nurseries in the area where you live, etc. But in general, they can vary between €200 and €300 per month for private nurseries.

Best Regards

@JohnnyPT creches are not free. The monthly payment is subjected to the parents income.

@Nia,

Thank you for your correction. The information I gave is decontextualised indeed.

@nz7521137 It's not that. We want to be closer to our family, this is the primary reason.
