Vaccinations

Hi,

My wife and I are visiting Ecuador in April. We will stay the majority of the time in either Quito or Cuenca. We also plan to visit the Amazon basin and stay at an eco-lodge (Nicky Lodge) for 5 days/4 nights towards the end of our visit. My question is in regards to the availability of yellow fever, typhoid, and malaria vaccines in Quito or Cuenca. The local health department wants $316.00 per person for these vaccinations, which is insane. From what I gather I wouln't need these vaccination in Quito or Cuenca. Apparently that is not the same in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Preserve. Does anyone know whether I can get the above vaccinations once I arrive in Quito? If so, what would I expect to pay? Finally, regardless of where I end up getting the shots, are they really necessary? Thanks in advance.

Dear Rob,

Welcome to the Ecuador forum.

USA Today has an online Travel Tips article that would be a resource for you.

Google:  usa today travel tips Immunizations for travel to Ecuador

Immunizations are likely to be far less expensive in Ecuador, although it may depend on the doctor or clinic so I can't quote you a figure.
