Although the survey determined that the top five hospitals are in EC's two largest cities, it gave "honorable mention" to three hospitals in the third-largest city, Cuenca.

1. Hospital Universitario del Rio

"This hospital is Cuenca's newest and fanciest hospital.  Opened in 2008, it is a mixture of state-of-the-art technology, spacious rooms and customer service."

2. Hospital Santa Ines (aka St. Agnes)

"As it is located proximally to the University of Cuenca and the parts of town where the majority of Expats live, it is much closer and easier to get to its emergency room.  Though smaller, (it) still features seven floors filled with state-of-the-art medical equipment, well-trained staff and a well-organised ambulance service."

3. Hospital Mt. Sinai

"Like the Hospital Universitario del Rio it is large....But the emergency service department is smaller than that of Hospital Santa Ines."
