Do and don't in Fiji

Are you living in Fiji? We need you to share your experience of the local customs :)

Is it difficult to adjust to the local customs in Fiji?

Could you please share with us a list of the do's and don't's in Fiji?

Thanks!

Ni sa Bula vinaka
Hope this helps! :)

In Fiji DO NOT
Express your own opinions on anything political
Enter in racial negative conversations or arguments
Underestimate the intelligence of the local people
Exceed road speeds especially through villages
Assume being a tourist will exclude you from Fijian law
Try to barter prices in obvious established shopping centers
Use taxis that don't have meters as they are now illegal
Use loud or offensive language
Sunbathe nude (or topless if female) on a public beach
Drink the local water unless you know its been filtered

In Fiji DO
Show respect for all local peoples and their cultures
Show respect for all government official offices, police, military etc.
Acknowledge people with a friendly smile and wave, especially when travelling by roads that often are carved through their villages
Modestly cover yourself in public when not on a beach
Wear a sulu (male and female) when visiting a village
Try to say Bula (hello) as Fijians will respond in kind
Apply mosquito repellent daily to avoid infections from bites
Remove foot-wear when entering a vale (house)
Tip for extra-good service regardless of your bill
Say Vinaka (thankyou) when appropriate, it will be appreciated :)
