What are the key emergency numbers you should know by heart?
In the event of a legal problem, an accident, a natural disaster, an injury or the death of a close family member, what are the first things to do in Bulgaria?
What are the things to plan ahead in order to better cope with such unexpected situations (registration at the Embassy, transport, medical, comprehensive insurance for instance)?

Dealing with emergency situations in Bulgaria
Emergency number 112 same as the rest of Europe.
If you're an American expat, sign up for the STEP program and you'll be automatically registered with the American Embassy. They even called us to make sure it was our number and everything. They send periodic emails about heightened security alerts, etc.
For natural disasters, have spare food, blankets and clothes, water, and flashlights/candles. (LOTS of other things could be added to this list, but these are the essentials.) Put them in backpacks/suitcases in case you need to evacuate somewhere. Have small bills on hand to barter with if you need to. If you're emergency plan is getting all the way back to your host country, you could consider having cash for a plane ticket as well.
