I have a new friend from Jakarta who has recently moved to the U.S. with her husband. We are planning a party for them and I would like to fix a basket of spices for them that they have difficulty finding in California. Please let me know what spices she would like to have in order to cook the foods that she misses, from her home in Jakarta. Thank you so much!

Years ago we sold our old house in Bali to dear friends in California that only spend a month or two here in Bali each year, and they cook a lot of Indonesian dishes back in Sonoma. They have no problem finding virtually everything they need in local Asian specialty food stores there, so I wouldn't worry about your friend's ability to find the same.

My personal opinion is that rather than a basket of spices, give them a basket of US currency! That's something that they can really use, and will very likely, greatly appreciate.
