Questions re hostels in Brazil

I'm American, wondering how Brazilian hostels compare generally with those in the US?

More specifically: 1) are persons of all ages welcome?

2) I'm learning Portuguese pretty quickly, but will not be real fluent. a major problem? Do hostels in areas beyond the major cities differ in this respect?

Hi wkeith,

I believe that all of the hostels in Rio accept guests of all ages. Google "hostels in rio" and you'll get dozens of hits to check out.

Hi Keith,

If I remember correctly you will be traveling off the beaten path. If that is the case I would not expect hotels or hostels to speak English with any level of proficiency. I live in Manaus which is the capital of the Amazonas and large city. I can count on one hand the number of people I have met that speak fluent English here and two of them where at the DPF who denied knowing English but later decided to speak English because it was convenient for them.

Check out hostels.com, their listing generally indicate languages spoken, ages allowed, house rules, etc.

On a side note - other than room issues, needing "extra pillows" the language of $$$ usually requires very little language, unless they are shorted or you are shorted
