Any Plumbing and Fire fighting design engineers around?

Hi everyone,

I have a few questions and I need your help, if someone is willing to advice me I will really appreciate.
I am woman engineer, with a University degree in the field of Building Services Engineering , and I have over eight years experience working as a Hydraulic Design Engineer – cold and hot water supply, domestic sewage, rain water, sprinklers and hydrants systems, for civil and industrial buildings.
I'm interesting now in finding a job in Oman as an engineer. My questions are:
1. What legislation, code or standards are you using in Oman for designing plumbing and fire fighting systems. You use International plumbing code, NFPA, British Standards, etc. or you have local regulations, or combined? And also if you use computer programs for sizing the installation?
2. What suppliers are you using for plumbing and fire fighting materials and equipments?

Thanks in advance,
Anghel Marta

I'm a Fire Protection Specialist, having completed my masters in Fire & Explosion Engineering from the University of Leeds, UK. I have an experience of 3 years. Regarding your questions,

1. NFPA is the pre-dominant standard which most consultants follow. The BS norms are popular for fire modeling and stuff.. the local FRA norms, i.e. ROP standards of fire engineering are an abridged version of the BS norms.

2. We have different suppliers from UK / UAE / United States, India, Malaysia (aerosol clean agent). Can't really give our agency agreements here.

3. We also use licensed softwares for 2D, 3D, Hydraulic Calculations, Fire Modeling, Egress Modeling. etc.

Hi Rammy,

Thanks for the info, very useful.
What type of buildings are they constructing in Oman? I sow that high buildings are very rare.
At the company where you work are there any female engineers?

Thanks,
Marta

They have all types of buildings here.... Hotel projects, Commercial / Residential etc.... But your right, the scale of construction is much less compared to Dubai.

Also there aren't a lot of high rise buildings here.... I think its a royal decree or something....

Nope, we dont have any on-site female engineers, we used to have a designer, but she left.... we mostly have them in the admin department.
