Moving from the UK to Doha within the month....help!!!

Hi all, Just wanted to introduce myself and say hello. My name is Tony and I will be coming to work in Doha in the middle of June. I currently work in Spain and Italy but I am originally from London in the UK.

I have spent the last few weeks studying all the Doha and Qatar forums and to be honest, its amazed, excited and scared the life out of me all in one go!

The only place I have been in the middle east is to Dubai on a 6 day holiday several years ago, so I have no real idea what to expect in Qatar.

As I said, I have studied so many forums and peoples varying advice that I think I have just ended up back to square one and still confused!

So if anyone has really good advice that helped them when they first arrived, I would love to hear it.

Other than that, I would love to hear from anyone regarding socialising and sporting ideas (Football, squash, golf, tennis), but would particularly like to hear anyone who has moved from the UK.

Hope to hear from you soon
Tony

Hi and welcome to Expat.com Tony!

I hope the forum will be able to help you out.

Hi Tony

I am also just about to move to Doha from UK.  I am due to arrive in a couple of weeks. I currently live in Scotland but, luckily, I worked in Saudi for a couple of years so I have an idea what to expect, although Doha is much better than Saudi.

Like you, I have been on many Forums but the feedback is so varied that it is difficult to get a real feel for things.  Some people like it, some don't....

My son is coming with me (he is 14) and is really keen to continue with his football so I am trying to work on that.

Good luck with it all and I hope that it all works out for both of us...:))

Regards

Jim

Thanks Jim, good to hear from you. Im not sure when im moving over, but mid June seems to be the target.

Funny enough, although im getting on a bit now, I still play a lot of football and its something I will be looking to do when I get there. So let me know if you find any others willing to have a kick about, or any 5 a side leagues etc.
Im sure your son will be a lot better than me lol

Good luck

Tony

Hi  my husband is moving to Doha in August , I'm still swaying about relocating from Scotland to Doha, I also have a teenager , although I'm concerned about life for a western teenage girl in Doha ,  I'm also checking out loads of forums and blogs .., schools seem good but that's if you can get a place ..,   I always felt uncomfortable when we went out by ourselves in Bahrain ,  maybe we'll pop out for a holiday first ..,

[moderated: please post in the housing section]

My husband and I moved to Doha from the UK in August 2011. We have 4 children, the eldest of which is 13. Life is very different here but we managed to adapt quite well after the initial culture shock and have made some good friends. Tony - my husband plays 5 a side football twice a week, one evening at Doha College and another at Garveys (I can give you more info if required) so there are opportunities out here. We also know some keen golfers here.
As for the other post about life here for teenagers. I do worry that my daughter won't get the opportunity to be as independent here as she would back in the UK. We are likely to be here until she is 16, returning to the UK for her to do her A Levels. However, she has made a large circle of friends through school (Doha College) and the girls regularly meet up at each others Compounds. If anyone has any other specific questions I would be happy to answer them.

Hi Tony,
Just saw your note. How's it going. I haven't moved here yet but have a 3 month stint from March to June and have returned for a further 6 months to early March. If you fancy a beer sometime or a catch up let me. I am at the Ezdan in West Bay. Its Geoff by the way, born 61.  !!  Cheers - Geoff
