Job offer in Dar

Hi, I have been offered a new opportunity in Dar which I am considering.  I just have a few questions and hope a few can help me out -

1. What is the working culture like (intense, stressful, laid back etc)
2. Is there a good social scene for singles? I've seen a lot about families and don't want to be isolated
3. The company apartment is on the peninsular (oyster bay??), is this an ok area?
4. Outside of the expat community what are the local people like?
5. Company want me to go on permanent resident status, is the ok? Anyone else on this?

Much thanks in advance

Mark

Hi Mark,

2.there is a good social scene for singles,just depends on what u want,club/disco,bar/pub/beer,beach,weekend trips,golf,soccer,tennis,rugby,

3.the peninsular is more than ok,very accessible near the beach

4.locals expect u to learn swahili and they are friendly

4.

Thanks Beras for your reply.

Do any other members have anything to add? The more answers the better.  I can see my post has been visited many times but only one answer.

Hope to hear from you guys soon.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Dar is a fantastic place and there is a big community of expats. There are many  clubs, nice restaurants and movie theaters. Oyster Bay is the center of active expat life.

Concerning the work, it depends what is your field but in general it's more laid back style:) Locals are very friendly and  some Swahili will make  your communicion much easier:)

There are also some nice hospitals in that area and good supermarkets.

cheers,

Svetlana

Hi Mark,
See my response in blue,

1. What is the working culture like (intense, stressful, laid back etc)- this  varies, depending with the organisation you're working
2. Is there a good social scene for singles? I've seen a lot about families and don't want to be isolated - absolutely YES!
3. The company apartment is on the peninsular (oyster bay??), is this an ok area? Very much okay as you will not be experiencing the traffic jam, apart from the rush hours, plus this is where most of the expats lives, its also closer to the city centre
4. Outside of the expat community what are the local people like? - generally Tanzanians are very warm and friendly people (trust me, am not just saying that because am one, but its the fact)
5. Company want me to go on permanent resident status, is the ok? Anyone else on this? - am not sure what this means, as we dont have dual citizenship system, so may be you want to check with your company what this means

Karibu Tanzania!

Never see this before

KARIBU(WELCOME),

1. Stressful: Remuneration goes with responsibilities

2. Good place for family; Night life is available for singles but one has to be careful

3. Oyster bay is a nice place to live

4. Local people are good; Give and take respect

5. Going for residential status is your decision.  It all depends on which residential status you are going to loose to get permanent tanzanian residential status; To get local citizen ship like any other country there are rules and regulations;  It involves cost & time.

Regards,

Is good Mark,

I am also a new comers and I didn't find yet what I heard before before heading to Dar.

The thins you are talking is fine no any problem, if you go anywhere do anything then problem could arises but being as a discipline person you will not have to face any such conditions.

Good luck.

Hello
I guess comments from foreigners would be more useful for you than from locals as for locals life is in different colors.
Just writing my impression and comments after 2 weeks stay in Dar.Then it's up to you how you take it.
We are sent to Dar for long term, so for us  is important every detail about the country.
First stayed in guest house in Slipway, very very basic place , not my standard but looks like to have good standard in Dar is luxury ..
Moved finally to house in Oysterbay , that's only area acceptable to live ,no traffic , no noise , clean and mostly expats around but public beaches and other places near by  mixed and all sort of crowd...
Cannot say much about locals yet, need more time to find out ..some very friendly , some just carefree ,others care only for money making  , so depends what is your interaction with ppl . By evenings and even day time always on alert to lock car, watch hand bag ,pocket . Our house on high security standard :alarms, security guards, a dog ... So it says a bit about the country and ppl ..
About Work environment  can't say much , compare to Asia where we come from ,here all too slow and less efficient ..
Life is crazy expensive even for basic stuff so one must have good package to move here.
Heard life for singles more fun than for family, pubs ,discos ,casino, weekend trips.
I still didn't explore any social life here .
Also important to drive here or have driver.
We were so spoiled in Asia by everything that now in Dar will take time to adapt to new culture customs and environment.
Good luck and don't forget to share your experience in Tanzania .
