Headed for Cuenca...but worried about Government

What if this idyllic Cuenca, this lovely, affordable Ecuador, turns into Cuba?  Like...I arrive, and Edd and Vinny and Nards tell me, "You are now trapped in the Communist Paradise; Correa took off the mask yesterday".

My Spanish is insufficient to understand the rapid-fire conversation in the video clip below.  But whether or not you can understand the clip, please comment on the "revolucion ciudadana".

OceanHideaway posted: youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZGDicJYxX1s For those looking to emigrate, it is a good 2 minute video to get a taste of what the view is like concerning the revolucion ciudadana (citizen's revolution) of this socialist country.

I didn't see the video but what I can tell you is the Ecuador we had now is much better than the one we have 20 years ago.
Many people can complain because the president is arrogant and disrespecful, well yes but you have to have this kind of character to deal with all the problems in the country.
About Ecuador turn to Cuba I doubt it, Ecuador is not Venezuela, many times Hugo Chavez had talk about getting a more socialist country but not Correa, is vision is different from plain socialism, I think.

And anyways, it doesn't matter if it works. Ecuador is growing and the people, the common people lives better now than before while in Europe and US things are getting worse.

Vinny

Yeah be more concerned with direction the USA is going...scary!

It won't happen.

LOL no way. Correa isnt Chavez, and oceanhideway may be trying to scare people away. Some Gov is at odds with Ecuador since its military base was shut down here because it was found to support and fund violent oppositional movements, crime, corruption, drug trafficking and the likes. I would take an english article from an "official source" with a grain of salt. Who knows, with so much intelligence posting and making up english articles about Bad Correa, Bad Ecuador, Bad this Bad that..oh and the classic "threat" or "terrorists" "communists",etc. Some admins need to find enemies.
Just as Vinnie said we are better now than 20 years ago, major improvements took place ever since such military base was shut down and the Constitution (yes it is respected in this side of the world) is based on Human Rights and love for life, in fact as Ecuador's logo swears "Ecuador ama la vida". There is mutual cooperation among countries in this region, all following an education in Moral, Ethics, love for land and Nature. Unless you are coming to do drugs or corrupt people in anyway...you will love Ecuador.

*looking around the screen*

Ok, now, where's that "like" button?...

I agree with Edd, Ray and Vinny.
When you look at Ecuador, you see a country going in the right direction. Look at the infrastructure. A perfect example is the new modern light rail system that is being built in Cuenca. Look at Cuba. Do you see any forward movement for the society? I think not. You see improvement in all areas in Ecuador. Cubans are still driving cars from the 50's, and not as collectors, but out of nessesity, and although everyone is not driving brand new cars in Ecuador, they are available, and a possibility.
I'm betting on Ecuador.

I agree with Neil about the cars in Ecuador. I didn't see very many junky cars when I was there. Quite the opposite. Mostly a  late model cross section of what you might see in the US except for far more taxis.

Headed back there btw in two weeks this time to stay. . . I hope:)
We will be making our home in Quito .  I would have preferred Cuenca but my wife liked Quito better so you can figure who won that battle lol.

You didn't "lose," brother. Quito is a wonderful city. You'll love it.

A lot of what is written about Correa in the US media is, in my opinion, negative propaganda because he does things like send the US $23 million to improve their human rights. He's a ballsy guy who people tend to like a lot or not at all. Like any politico he's less than perfect but he's doing a good job. He's often criticized for being a socialist (not a communist)but has a long way to go in that regard to catch up to Obama.
