I got laid off a few years ago, and decided I did not want to work in an office any more. I have spent the last several years as a sailing bum, helping people move their sailing yachts around the world, mostly helping owners deliver their own yachts. My idea was to eventually use my life savings to buy a nice yacht and offer crewed multi-day charters in Prince William Sound of Alaska. Now I am seriously considering just taking those life savings and moving someplace nice, maybe Belize, Malaysia or someplace. I am in my early 50's, and think I have enough money saved up to last the rest of my life if I can find someplace with reasonable prices and good quality inexpensive healthcare. Of course I might do something for extra money if it sounds interesting and fun. Maybe something in sailing, SCUBA, or writing.
