Born East African. World traveller. Been here and about. Animal lover. Food lover. Tree hugger :)
I joined expat.com on 29 July 2015.
I didn't spend the entire 5 years in SA.. I kept going back home to East Africa (Uganda)... I mostly did School over in SA and the short holidays.. The longer holidays, I spent back home mostly with friends. Most of my family lived permanently in SA at the time.
BRAAI!!! Braai is basically backyard barbecue (You can equate it to the American 4th of July bbq) except there's no need for an occasion to Braai .. a South African tradition of sorts. Downright best thing about my time in SA. It was less about the bbq itself, more about the people who came by.. I made most of my friends having Braai :) Gosh I miss Braai :( The Scenery, the people, the food... so many things to love.
Some areas are pretty chaotic (read dangerous) and are best avoided especially if you were a foreigner. Moving around with weapons (knives and guns) in SOME AREAS not all places, seemed to be the norm which was a shock my little East African self :). Also having to carry documentation at all times was pretty tiring. I would literally panic if I ever forgot my passport home, even with a trip to the grocery store. I think I was overreacting though. I can count the number of times I got asked for documentation. The neighbourhood we lived in was pretty safe though. So that was a relief.
