Life as a digital nomad in Germany

There is no visa type for "digital nomadism" (meaning people who live here and work remotely for foreign employers or customers), so this is only an option for EU citizens and others who do not need a work permit (e.g. holders of family reunion visa with free access to the labour market).
Even for those, the bureaucratic hurdles are high, because they are classified as self-employed and thus have to take care by themselves of all formalities (and associated costs) of business registration, licensing, taxation, social security and compulsory insurances, accounting, etc. Without near-native knowledge of German, this is not possible - and engaging professional help for each of these topics would cost too much to make such arrangements feasible in most cases.
But if you fulfil the above requirements, Germany is an attractive (though not cheap) location for "digital nomads", due to its high living standard and good infrastructure.
