Healthcare for U.K. Citizens

Hi, myself and my wife intend moving to the Algarve on a permanent basis. We are both 60 and retired. What are your experiences of healthcare in Portugal? Is there an affordable top up option to improve on national health care?

Thanks

Hi.
I live in Central Portugal and had a need to call for an ambulance. It arrived within 15 minutes.
I was treated exceptionally well by the Bomberio who sorted my documents certificate of residency, nif, passport etc and taken to Coimbra hospital within 30 minutes
I had a more than thorough examination and treated almost immediately with medication to stop both the pain and nausea.
Ultrasound followed then off to a different area for observation more medication for pain and antibiotics to work on the cause.
It was mid evening before it was decided that I was well enough to leave and was kept in observation until my transport arrived.
I left with a prescription and expected some form of charge to pay for my treatment.
No charge
Charge for prescription next day at pharmacy €14.
A1 treatment all the way.
Regards
Richard
