Dental Crown in HCMC

I'm debating whether to have a crown down in HCMC or the USA. But the USA can be a PIA because I would need to return to my dentist in NYC and I'm in California.

Any suggestions, comments or experiences?

.
    So wot's wrong with Thailand..?

Competitive, world class, closer, cheaper...       :unsure

     ..research is recommended...
.

Check my post in October 17 where I highly recommend a Saigon Dentist.
My wife and I have had extensive work carried out there, mostly crowns, all at very reasonable cost.
Hygiene excellent, sufficient English to get by.
Just mention our names and she will look after you...
Liep and Mike

Take a look at the Bangkok International Dental Clinic. My friends from the US went there for extensive dental work (crowns / implants) and were extremely satisfied. Staff is trained in the US or Europe and are fully certified. Prices are much less than the US not to speak of travel time and cost.

If you are living here, it is time for you to 'bite' the bullet and go full immersion.  :top:  There are just-as-good-as-US dentists here at the high-end clinics. They all use lidocaine. Just overcome your prejudice (like I had) and start with an evaluation, see for yourself.

Saigon: West Coast Dental  most often recommended by expats here. Very modern, speak English. I had a through cleaning and xrays, $50

Saigon: Dr Hung Associates, friend of mine from Oz came for crowns and implants, savings paid for the trip, and included airport pickup and drop off! Speaks English, she was very happy.

Bangkok: Thonglor Dental Hospital my best experience ever, a top ranking clinic in Thailand, unbelievably modern and professional, 3 floors, many specialists, all English speaking, for expats, tourists, and well off Thai. The room for the crown procedure like a surgical bay, larger than the complete office and waiting room of my California dentists, with specialist and 2 dental assistants. The filling was by the filling specialist also with 2 assistants. Amazing. Crown $400, filling $60.

I had 2 crowns done last August at Rose dental clinic in Q1 next to the market in HCM they have done a great job and at a very good price. 100% happy with their service. Work completed in 3 days.

Hi Wxx3,
Still maintain that our reccomendation would be the best.
We visited some of those mentioned plus others and were not impressed with their standards of hygiene and were not that reasonably priced.
Best thing, go check each one yourself and ask how much, leave ours till last as you will be as impressed as we were...

West Coast dental not clean?

I used to do Dental tourism with them and there surgery was spotless, maybe you went to a copy cat company which is very common in VN.

That's quite possible, I don't remember them specifically.
I do remember thinking how expensive some of them were...

Thanks All,

I'll be back in HCMC a the end of May, so  wil do it then. It costs me very little if I was in NY, but I'm in California, so I may as well be in Vietnam.

As for those who think I am willing to put up with the heat from my GF to go to Thailand for anything, well, you have another think coming.

She would spend a week convinced I had broken a tooth just to find a thai women
OR
I was visiting my secret Thai family.

But thanks for the suggestions.

Oh, well luckily she doesn't know there are Thai girls in California.
Also Filipinas, Singapore girls, Latinas, Chinese, Colombian, Venezuelan, Brazilian, Swedish, French, Italian, Ukrainians, movie stars, models, ...

Ok wait, she is there with you.  :(  Nevermind.

I would not call $380 (AUS) expensive for 2crowns, and Rose dental clinic was very clean. Their work was first class. I would recommend them any time.

Wadey

380$ AUS for 2 crowns??????????????????????????????????
I'm coming back in VN now :D

In Europe it's like 1000€ PER crown.... (+/- 1150$ US) and I badly know it myself!!!
I don't want to even think about American's price without social security / insurance it must be crazy

Joke/reality apart and as previously said before in this topic, dental stuff are REALLY low cost in Vietnam compared to our standard, but you've to keep in mind that they're around 5/10 years late with the latest "technology/components" used in America/Europe.
Most of the dentist in VN, still prefer to remove a teeth than try to keep it compared to what they would try to do in EU/USA where healthcare are proven to be currently the best...... (I saw it with my fiancee)
The way of thinking about the dentists are also pretty differents and you need to keep it into account in your judgment... They're still pretty old school...

Scaremongering?  :/

"most of the dentists in VN still prefer to remove a tooth"
As the population of Vietnam is 65% rural, and the income of a majority of city populations is a few $100/month, then it is true to say that Vietnamese mostly resort to the cheapest procedures at the cheapest providers.
But the forum audience is expats. Surely you know there are different levels of service here as in most of the 3rd world. No expats are going to 200.000vnd dentists.

"they're around 5/10 years late"
I got very high quality care in 2014 from my California dentist and would have no worries boarding a time machine to return for my next visit. I'm pretty sure dental science isn't leapfrogging to be  obsolete in a decade. I am also inclined to think your "5/10 year" comment is just assumption on your part.

If you have sources about the differences in medical/dental technology, Vietnam vs the west, please share.

Well I kinda agree with you, but some expats are in a extreme low-cost way of living, and that's also one of the reason they're in VN...
Through hell yeah, you're right, I would absolutely never go to a 200k vnd dentist myself and I would try to find the best one I can, which I (hope I) did.

I was talking about personal experience in my previous comment, I actually had the need of tooth care few months ago in Da Nang... (broken a piece of a tooth while eating), pretty expensive for VN (well 1-2 millions VN if I remember correctly / REALLY cheap compare to EU) and really good looking place. (recommended by a fellow french expat that I met through this forum).
The VN dentist did his studies in Europe and was talking English. Seems perfect to me!

But... my Belgian dentist just removed everything that he did when I came back in EU, telling me that what was done was "old fashion" and that it wouldn't last 5/10 years like we're "used to it" (using old composite/material/color of the tooth - HIS words, not mine)
I'm kinda trusting him, he's not a angry money dentist (through he's fu**** expensive), more a perfectionist than anything else to me.
He has enough work left to do on me for the next coming years... No reasons for him to do it knowing I'm a 'good regular' costumer to him.

So, was it a good job? In my opinion yes, and really cheap compare to EU. I can't argue at all.
Did he do the job? yes, absolutely in my opinion. But "no", in the eyes of my dentist (professor at UCL, one of the 2 biggest university in my country).

Now... let's be honest few minutes. I appreciate the job that was done, but how can we expect to have the best health care in a "Third world country" compare to our "rich"  and "more technology advanced" countries? I highly doubt so...
There's a reason why my diplomatic website say: If you need health care, go to Singapore/Bangkok or back in EU).......

Do I have scientific proofs? Not at all... Just repeating here what my own dentist told me.
Do I trust what my Belgian dentist said, knowing he's a well known professor in one of the best university in Belgium/EU? Yes, absolutely.

I'm no dentist myself and I'm not even trying to argue...
Again, I was just reporting what my own dentist told me and through my experience.

We just want the best for ourself, right?

So, I did end up going to Nha Khoa Ky Thuat Cao Au My in Q1.
113-115 Dinh Tien Hoang, Da Kao, Q1 as @michaellieptourists recommended above.

I liked them very much. If I ever have any more issues, I will return.
I've told my GF that she and her son should go there so and have whatever work needs to be done, done.
A normal crown would cost 5M vnd.  I think that's a very good price.
I was charged 300k for a filling.

So, why didn't I have the crown done?

The dentist advised me that my tooth in question is very small in height, it's at the back of my jaw in front of my already extracted wisdom tooth.

She said I needed a gold crown, like it's neighbor has that was done about 15 years ago.
She said the normal tooth colored cement is not strong enough for that location and that the only gold crowns they can get in Vietnam come from China and are of dubious quality.

I really appreciated her honesty.

Hi . I always get my dental work done here . Always used the same dentist . Hes great . fair price and Ive never had a prob with the work hes done .I can give you his contact if you want to contact me .

I am in Sydney Australia and went to a great dentist in hcmc and saved thousands I have had 3 other mates go to the same place and all are very 😃

I've been in Saigon this whole week for a major dental work.  The dentist is a very long time (30+ years) friend of my niece and nephew.  His wife is also a dentist.  His daughter is attending a dental uni in Japan on a merit scholarship.  As I have to sit on the dentist chair every day, we have time to talk.  I told him about this thread.  Below is the few things he shared with me today, which might be of interest to someone:

-  The machine, the material, and the technique of producing the crown all come from the West, mostly the US.  Therefore, the quality of the crown is the same in Vietnam as in Western countries.

-  The cost of the crown is lower not because of lower quality, only because of lower labour cost.

-  Reputable Vietnamese dentists attend training on new methods and procedures regularly, whether the training, seminars, and conferences are held in country or abroad.  They don't have any difficulty acquiring visa for these trips no matter the destination so rarely would anyone refuse to go.

-  There are 3 prices for crowns:  1.5M for crown with nickel frame,  2.5M for crown with titanium frame, and 5M for crown with zirconia frame.

-  The higher the price, the thinner and more transparent the porcelain.  If the material of the frame is not a factor in the patient's decision (it should definitely be — I speak from personal experience),  the difference is mostly in the aesthetic aspect.  The durability of the porcelain is the same throughout.

-  A reputable lab gives 5-year warranty on the crown it creates.  A reputable dentist gives a lifetime warranty on his/her installation of the crown.

Due to my age, he suggested the middle priced crown instead of the most expensive one for me.  I'm very happy with the way my teeth look and the way my face is brighten when I smile.  And the lifetime warranty?  No need to expound.

There are many amazing Dentists in Sai Gon (and I assume Ha Noi) however equally there are many unknowns that anyone considering doing Dental/Medical procedures should consider PRIOR going to Vietnam.

NOTE: many Dentists in Vietnam are highly trained Orthodontists that update to the latest advances by studying in Paris. This should be asked about prior any dental works are paid for and done.-DUE DILIGENCE!.

****
There is no doubt many Aussie's either as individuals or as companies recommending and providing great services for clients looking to have dental procedures done in Vietnam, thas great HOWEVER as I live in Vietnam (actually in Melbourne to next year, then I return back to Sai Gon).

***
Seems most persons providing dental procedures do not actually live in Vietnam which has it's up's and down's when the business doesn't go to plan (trust me on this one it happens way too often mainly because of the language barriers).

There are many amazing Dentists in Vietnam, no doubt, There are equally many Aussies that arrange dental works but sadly not all have the actual experience of living in Vietnam, like I did and will again next year. I am a Temporary Resident of Vietnam and unlike most foreigners, I decided to do the respectful thing and obtained both my car and motorbike license. Whats these things got to do with teeth?... Plenty as I am usually the Chauffer (if not I have my private driver that I ensure through teaching Aussie English he is up to what is needed when dealing with my clients).

The trick is to do research, ground work and due diligence PRIOR to leaving Australia, regardless if it Word of Mouth VND or another provider, I seriously cannot stress that enough.

Once settled on what one needs then you can leave Aussie with confidence and met in Tan Son Nhat Airport usually by me. That is something I wish I would have had 10 years ago when I had my teeth done in D4 in Sai Gon.

I lived there for 4 years and will return there 2020. Trust me having an Aussie on the ground that can drive a car and know all the go-to not to go to places in Sai Gon is worth the ticket alone.

Thanks for letting me know a little about your experience.

I suggest you go to Thailand instead. I had a dental implant at Thantakit Dental Center and their work was seamless. It was only around 60,000 Baht per tooth. Never had an issue with their work and communication. Thantakit brought the Invisalign technology to Thailand. The place is reputable. Make sure to research further when choosing a medical or dental facility. I recommend the top rated ones. Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck.

Do it there, I had two done in front of my mouth beautiful colour match and very happy with the workmanship, at the
dental hospital in Tran Hung Dao st. Since then I've had 3 bridges.

my dentist said I should get braces, but it costs too much for me, should I start collecting money from now or it's not a problem if I won't get braces?

No, you need to do it.

Braces are sexy.

The top international dentistry practices in Saigon, where the staff have got their qualifications abroad- usually in Australia but some in the US and elsewhere - match anything in Bangkok on quality and price as well as saving the hassle and cost of treatment trips {and i was saying that pre-COVID).  .

Is the need for braces health-related?  Some people need them to prevent jaw problems.  If it is merely cosmetic, I'd say the decision is up to you.

Hi Nicholas

What was the dentist that you attended in HCM?

I don't know Nicolas, but FYI I am having a crown done now. It is a rear molar, had old filling with a cavity inside.

First I went for an exam and cleaning, cost $70.  They added xrays for $35, and spotted the cavity.

The porcelan crown and labor is $485. You would need the xrays too.

I got the temporary Thursday, getting the final crown Tuesday.

This is at Westcoast Intl Dental in D1. Considered the premium dentist for Saigon expats, that's why the prices are higher that you may expect, but ~ 1/3 of California. I've been going there for years, my dentist is Dr Tram Anh, she's great. (My very favorite dental clinic is in Bangkok but I'm not there now).

You can find other dentists too that are a bit cheaper, tons of medical dental cosmetic surgery tourism here.
