ATM fraud

ATM skimmers and other frauds are still around in Indonesia so, if you see something unusual, don't use the machine.
Supermarkets and such places are usually fine as the places have 24 hour security but outside machines are prone to thieves.
I noticed this one this morning so I didn't use it just in case, but I have reported it to BNI.
It isn't absolutely a skimmer but there was no way I was using a machine that looked off, just in case.

This is a new one on me, but it appears to be on the rise so be careful.
I have little by way of detail but it looks like the gangs black the card slot so your card gets stuck, then answers a fake helpline number on the machine. I'm guessing they ask for your PIN so they can return to the machine when you leave and have their wicked way with your bank account.

The answer is two fold.

The easy one is to follow bank advice and NEVER tell anyone your PIN for any reason, but my preferred version is to follow what I do (if possible).

I never use an ATM card as I use the BCA app's cardless transactions facility. That means logging on using my phone, then going through a simple set of presses that gives me a one time use code. I enter my phone number and the code into the ATM, and out comes the cash with my card never seeing the machine.

The rest of my day to day banking is on the app as well.

I strongly recommend this method.

The perpetrator blocked an ATM card slot and gave a fake call center number on an ATM machine located on Jalan Robusta Raya, Pondok Kopi, Duren Sawit, East Jakarta on Thursday 17 February yesterday.

ANTARA - The Cirebon City Police, West Java, managed to arrest 3 perpetrators of blocking ATMs, on Pramuka Street, Harjamukti District, Cirebon City, West Java, Monday (1/8). The perpetrators act by inserting a toothpick into the ATM machine.
Atm scam's will continue, i hardly use them and certainly not outside and/or in remote places. It's a game of cat and mouse between the criminals and the police

Agreed - but the criminals always get ahead for a short time before the cops grab them. That's just the nature of criminality.
I'm feeling slightly smug as the cardless system available from BCA and other banks solves that one.
My only reason to use an ATM is withdrawing cash, and cardless using the app makes that a lot safer.
@benni

The second reason - topping up my Flazz card - was removed with your help. As my old Flazz was the old type, I couldn't top it up using my phone. Your mention of the newer type of card solved that one for me. Thank you .

@Fred for example in Sweden you hardly see people with cash anymore, it's all cashless. In the Netherlands and Germany gangs are blowing up atm's to get their hands on the cash.

The same isn't true here ... yet.
The Indonesian government is pushing cashless like crazy and I think it's great. I could almost scrap cash but my favourite fried rice stands and so on don't accept electronic payments just yet .. but that's also changing. One local place I use has go-pay because they have go-food. I've paid a few times like that.
It's coming, and the government are pushing like crazy to accelerate it.
Thanks buddy for the information.

It never stopped, but it's back in the news again.

Returning crowds has brought back more scammers. I have no idea who is running the latest lot, but a lot of Ukrainians and others from that region were at it last time.

Another to hit the news is money changers - they count out you cash, drop under the counter for a second, then give you most of your money.

The solution is easy - Get a receipt THEN count the cash before you leave the counter.

If you are short changed, get the missing cash immediately then report the thief to the cops.

This won't work for tourists, but it will for expats.

Use your bank's app to do cardless transactions at ATMs. No card means no skimming.
