Naturalisation and citizenship in New Caledonia

Hello everyone,

What are the requirements for acquiring citizenship in New Caledonia? For example, length of residence, language requirements, employment etc..

What formalities are involved in the process?

What is the policy on dual-citizenship in New Caledonia? Do you have to give up your former nationality?

What are the advantages and benefits of acquiring French citizenship, in your opinion?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

French nationality is extremely useful here.   Other nationalities (ALL nationalities, no exceptions) must get an annual 'Carte de Sejour'.   To get a foreign work permit is very difficult unless you are a big company and then that is for a limited amount of time.   Even a French national must be 10 years on the island before they can be hired full time without extra formalities (especially finding a local with the same qualifications).    All of the above people cannot vote in the first of three island referendums in 2018.  The best thing is to be born here and never leave.
