Moving to Madagascar with your family

Hello everybody,

When settling abroad with your spouse and children, the expatriation process requires an extensive preparation.

What are the considerations to take into account when moving to Madagascar with your family? What challenges have you faced? How did your children adapt to their new environment?

What is your recipe for a successful family expatriation in Madagascar?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Bhavna

My husband and I are volunteers who have lived here for 7 years; 6 years in Fianarantsoa in the mountains and 1 year in Toamasina on the coast. We have enjoyed our stay very much but we see many foreigners who struggle who have not yet learned the Malagasy language.

We would highly recommend beginning a 3 months language course upon your arrival and beginning to apply what you learned immediately.

The language can be difficult so you should not be too hard on yourself. But 20 new words a day is a good goal and you will find it easier for your children to adapt.

To make games that the family can do together in the evenings might also make this new life something exciting that the family is doing together and not something scarry that Dad has done to us by moving us to this island.
