Moving to Nairobi from India

Hi I am Arvind from India.

I am a brand and communications specialist. I currently have an offer from Nairobi which is offering me $4000 post deductions/month.

I currently draw INR 2 lakhs (Approx $3100) post deductions / month in Bangalore India. Is this a viable option for a move? I believe the living cost of Nairobi is much higher than India specially for accommodation, education and healthcare (the latter 2 not being very high in India).

If they improve the offer to $5500/month would it make sense to consider if its just this salary and no benefits?

We live in 3BR gated community and the little one goes to a great school. Don't want to compromise on either and yet be able to save. We are 3 of us the wifey, me and our little girl (aged 2). No vices!! :)

Hi aravind

Hi Arvind,
You cannot compare apples and oranges right? the salary offered to you usd 4000 is stiff but will give you valuable intl exp and chances are that in a few years time you will progress in salary levels as prospective/Existing employers prefer local knowledge. Now coming to your salary .The biggest expense is housing and education( USD 700+200).
If you can negiogate  housing this is a good salary. In case you are getting 5500 all inclusive its Damn  good. The advantage of staying in places like kenya are u moderate your spends Provided u are not lavish in living) unlike india where spends are high  you can save anywhere between 1700-2000 on a  salary of 4000  purely on your lifestyle with a compact non compromised living. In case your wife is qualified she may be eligible for employment provided the prospective employer gets the permit.
All the best good luck

Dear Arvind
