Hi Deepakvijayaragunathan,

Bringing prescription drugs without a valid prescription is banned. So are the carrying of any psychotic substances (obvious) ! Drinking alcohol in public is banned. So is seen drunk in public places. Pork is banned, but are sold at select outlets and under proper specifications. Serving cooked pork in restaurants in banned. VoIP is banned. Pornography is banned. Prostitution is banned.

In short, anything which is considered to be abusive, offensive, obscene, immoral or promoting misleading or fraudulent information and illegal material are all banned.

All expatriates must realise and understand that they are in a foreign country. And they must do well to completely abide by the local laws, rules and regulations. Anyone getting on the wrong side of the law are bound to get penalised and punished, if caught.

Strange! According to PROVPN's website Oman not only blocks VOIP and Skype, but also many websites.

So who's right?

use vpn

As James has rightly pointed out, all VoIP facilities ARE BANNED in Oman.

Skype too is banned. So are all sites of questionable content.

But there are many VPN service providers who can bypass the firewall and provide the users access to these sites.

And it is quite commonly done.

The question is, Sumitran, what are the risks associated with using VPNs? Jail time, fine, deportation, a stern talking to?

:)

Hi skibby,

Since using VPN is illegal as per the laws of this land. So if caught and proven guilty, the felon is liable to get punished. Usually it will some sort of a fine, failure to pay will result in simple imprisonment. But the authorities are not really interested in sending behind bars some poor expatriate. What they usually do is to grill the guilty until he spills all the beans as to who are the others who are involved in this racket - trying to get to the roots so that the plant is killed before it grows into a shrub, a tree and ultimately into a jungle.

Are whatsapp calls barred or its just poor reception? .free things always turn out to be expensive.
China blocked Facebook and most Google apps but ppeople breakthrough and access those sites including YouTube.

A few months ago I had difficulties with my Gmail account thought it was blocked.

Hi Mariamns,

Officially, WhatsApp calls are also banned - just like the rest online - here in Oman.

However, you can bypass the firewalls if you connect through a VPN.

You must first set up a VPN account in your computer / mobile device to be able to connect to all those 'blocked sites'.

Is using torrent is banned in oman?  :(
