Good recommendation Hospital and Clinic in HCM

Hi All,

I had a bad experience last year while coming to Vietnam. Got on the plane and felt really sick and have to be admitted to hcm hospital. The next day fever and headache, and stomach pain did not go away so decided to catch a plane back to Malaysia. For a night the bill is USD1400, they wanted to continue test and medication for another USD2400. That is when I decided to leave to go home for my family doctor to see. Anyone have experience or know of any GOOD clinic and Hospital in hcm city? Probably clinic for outpatient services like cough, fever etc. Hospital will be inpatient for really sick and emergency cases where overnight stay is needed.

Hi Danny,

Sorry to hear about what you had to go through. Perhaps share with us which hospital quoted you those crazy prices?

Hi Shen,

The hospital that Vietnam airline took me to is SOS international hospital. There are a few things that we can learn from my experience. This hospital is really expensive. I was admitted in a private hospital in Malaysia for USD1000, but was for a three days stay with blood, x-ray, ultrasound, colonscopy and gastroscopy tests. We need to find out which is the better option. Insurance is important for foreigner and expat that live here. So this trip to HCM I have two insurance, to be better prepare.

ciao'

International SOS is a private international clinic that is a for profit medical group with offices all over the world. They are primarily used by international businesses for their employee coverage. They tend to be very expensive.
FV hospital and clinics seem to be a popular choice in Saigon.

Thanks for the information Dan. FV is the Franco vietnam hospital at D7. I heard also that the Victoria hospital is also a good choice and is at D1. For local hospitals, there are Medical university Hospital at D5 and Medic hospital at D10. These two need local vietnam speaking interpreter.

Family Medical Practice (rear of Diamond Plaza on Le Duan D1) is also quite good, they have English speaking doctors and staff too.
I personally don't like FV. I found that the admin staff are rude and doctors always rush and don't take the time to consult and diagnose, considering the amount they charge. Maybe I was just unlucky.

$1400 for 1 night , my goodness , that is more expensive than the US . i HAVE BEEN AS AN INPATIENT AT fv 2 TIMES AND I FIND THEM TO BE VERY GOOD AND PROFESSIONAL

something is not right.
First off, the SOS International branch in Saigon is a tiny clinic, mostly for quick checkup, certainly not a hospital.
https://www.internationalsos.com/en/abo … m_3536.htm
From its website, it states it has only
"Three-bed in-patient area specialist consultations – pediatric care, cardiology, dermatology, orthopedics, osteopathy, ophthalmology, ENT (ear, nose and throat), clinical psychology, women's health"
None of the specialty mentioned fits your symptoms.

I have never used them, but talked some time ago to a Vietnamese doctor who works there. He gave me very detailed description about the clinic. Certainly very professional. Nothing appeared to me to be a place that charges a lot. In fact, they use a lot of Vietnamese doctors there, so I'd expect their fees to be low. SOS International is an approved clinic of many health insurance providers here (as well as many employers as mentioned by VTD), so certainly not a fly-by-night operation who overcharges when they can.

Family medical clinic is good also but not sure have in patient service. Their charge is usd50 per consultation. When I was at SOS, they told me their charges is usd150. So is three time as much already. Whatever the reason they charges so much for blood test and a night stay is not so very important but they did charges usd1400. In fact let me say they are pretty good and a clean place. However, when i felt that the charges are high is just not ethical at all. The important question i posted now is to find another alternative which from the reply there are plenty alternative in hcm city which is very encouraging to hear.

As mentioned earlier, I have not used them before, but what you have told us certainly does not make sense.
The market certainly does not support a charge of 150USD per standard consultation. SOS, given their clientele already being mostly international tourists and expats, has no reason to overcharge you more than anyone else just because you are a foreigner or a tourist.

Neither does your claim of 1400 USD per night stay make sense, given what I know about what SOS provides and what you have given us.

Anyway, if you don't like them, here is a list of alternatives in Saigon which I copy from my health insurance policy.

I disagree Annatta, I have been there 4 or 5 time in the last few years to get medical physicals for working offshore in the oil industry. It has always been 150usd for the office visit and  145usd for the blood work and physical. I was very surprised the first time I went there because there were so many Vietnamese people there and I was sure they could not afford that. I learned later that most of them were having the expense direct billed to their companies so of course they were not having to pay for it out of pocket. ISOS charges the same rate in every country they operate in, they don't change the fee just because they are in Vietnam.

VTD
That is certainly good for us to know. As mentioned earlier, II don't know how much they charge since I have not used them, so I am very surprised when you confirmed the high charge. I have used some other clinics mentioned in my list (which includes SOS Int'l, by the way), and also used direct billing charge to my insurance company, so I did not pay much attention how much they charged me, but certainly not 150USD/ consultation.

Have you used Hanh Phuc before, either the clinic in Dist. 1 or the hospital? We had our daughter there in March and my wife loves it there, so much so that she takes our daughter back there for her regular check ups, coming from Vung Tau that takes a couple hours round trip.

VTD
Not been in Hanh Phuc, but personally have used
1. COLUMBIA ASIA GIA DINH
2. CENTRE MEDICAL INTERNATIONAL

Know friends who have used
3. FAMILY MEDICAL PRACTICE in Diamond
4. COLUMBIA 8 Alexandre de Rhodes

All of them are OK.

I second Hanh Phuc, it's as good as it's gonna get in Vietnam.

I wish I had gone to Hanh Phuc for the birth of my daughter. I regret my experience at FV. Will definitely keep it in mind if needed in the future ;)

I look at the Hanh Phuc Hospital website and they look like specializing in women, children and fertility care. This is definitely good to know more and more good international standard medical services coming to HCM. By the way, Hanh Phuc is a Singapore standard hospital.

I opted for HP even though FV is right down the street, I have heard bad things about it. sorry your birth wasn't ideal. If it makes you feel better, HP is the best but still far from ideal. Just one thing we have to get use to here for now.

Thats a shame,  I had my two children here at FV and would totally recommend it,  remember each birth experience is different and is so unique depending on pain level,  midwife care,  emergency situations,  post natal support etc.  I have had friends who had terrible times at Hanh phuc aswell,  especially with neonatal.  FV have been open far longer and much more experienced procedures/staff.  IN fact many staff from HP are from FV originally,  lured away by nice salaries !!    HP does look lovely, but you cant judge a hospital by its furniture.

A couple of months ago I had to have a large tumor removed (tennis ball size) and I went to Columbia Hospital and they wanted in excess of $2000 to remove it. I went to the large family hospital on No Trang Long and had the operation done for $60!

So the large family hospital is a government hospital. That is a big difference in cost. In fact some government hospital in Malaysia are good now with state of the art medical equipment.

I think you try to Gia Đinh Hopital in Lê Quang Định Steet. I had came it and I know, This is a good hoppital and not expensive

I usually go to Victoria Health care clinic and FV hospital. FV just opened its new clinic at Bitexco Financial Tower last month. I personally prefer Victoria as the doctors there use less "medication" than FV.

Hi all;

Can anyone recommend good and reliable clinic/ hospital where one can do thorough heart check-up? I am looking for good diagnosis expert and have some suspicions when it comes to some "obvious" expat clinics such as Family Medical Practice and similar as I have the impression their heart patients "turnover" is not and high, which might mean lack of experience.

Also, does anyone have any experience with Tam Duc hospital and their doctors? They seem to have a good heart check-up packages, and are specialized cardio hospital.
Also, Yersin and Victoria clinics seem to have specialized cardiology departments, are they places anyone would recommend for serious heart check-up?

I heard about FV, but am not interested...

Thank you in advance for your help.

FV as told to me by an unlicensed doctor that works there is for the rich.

Next to FV in D7 is the heart clinic, you can't miss it, it's right next door.

Thanks a lot for the reply, but is there any reason to choose that particular one?

Umm, you asked for a heart check up, this hospital deals in cardiology, www.tamduchearthospital.com

Yes; thanks, Tam Duc is exactly one of those I am asking about - I thought maybe someone has personal experiences :)

The reason I mentioned it was that a guy Here who had a massive heart attack was taken there and worked on, he made a full recovery.

Greets!

As things are subjective, I'd like to add what little I've seen simply to compile to the data pool- the good and not-so noted.

Last month I went to Family (vietnammedicalpractice online) at Diamond Plaza with what turned out to be a tear in a knee.

First visit, a minion got to the door as I did, grabbed a wheelchair and got me set up right now with triage, then to Julian, x-ray, some sticks to walk on and nsaids- a c-note and a half for this day- could've been 900 in US.

Pretty smooth thus far

Appt with ortho that week, 84-

He sent me to MRI, which the office chose at Yersin, citing about 500 at Family- only 125 there, same day.

Ortho next week- needs arthro surgery. If we do next week, you stay one night (it's a shorter one in US, I read), walk in a day. My secretary will call you...

That was a Thurs. No call that week.

No call next week.

Went back Monday after to get my films and go elsewhere. Girl at desk "I understand"

Waited 40 mins downstairs. Girl from desk came over saying secretary busy. It's 3200. She'll call me.

That was 2 weeks ago.

I had sent an email to the ortho right after our first visit. Asked if I should get a brace.

He couldn't find or recall this the next week.

I have a tough time wanting to be cut open in a scenario of even one sketchy factor. Maybe it's me, but after the stories of the wrong leg or kidney in the States, I at least want to be awake (in the US one is, I read), in light of this comm thing.

Just had a recent incident when my blood pressure shot up suddenly. I went to Victoria Clinic twice for check up and consultation. i found that this place is small but service is fast and doctors are very good. The cost is reasonable too as the first visit is 600,000 with medicines. Second visit is 750,000 with also a ECG check on my heart at their in house facility.

Here is a link to some hospitals, its a very long link.

" ...  they wanted to continue test and medication for another USD2400"

I find that's a common practice in Vietnam if they knows you have money, keeps you in the hospital as long as possible for no reason with unnecessary tests so they can milked you.

I'm curious how a forgeiner (non-vietnamese overseas) could be treated a a state run hospital...I was turned away from three
large state run hospitals and all I needed was tetnus shot after stepping on a nail.  I was told State run
hospitals are not allowed to treat forgeiners...

I would much rather go to international hospital anyway, but why the inconsistency??

Never heard of that, been to state run hospitals no problem. You sure it wasnt a military or police hospital.

I have been to three or four different hospitals, always take a savy Vietnamese with me and never had a problem.
