German residency

Hi.
Anyone knows how a Canadian citizen can get a resident status in Berlin as an independent artist,or an NGO head?is it very beaurocratic?
Do you need a certain amount of $$$ in the bank? How easy it to renew your papers and get permanent residency,as well as medical insurance? And also, what if you decide to move to another EU country and bring over relatives?
I know it is a lot to ask,any answer will be apreciated.

Hi Serge,

usually you have to apply for your work permit before you come to Germany. As you are Canadian you are priveledged to apply after your arrival in Germany as well. BUT you are not allowed to work before you get the permit.

Due to the high unemplyment rate in Germany the government decided to limit the work permits from foreigners. Work permit will be given only for specific occupations.
Best would be to check in your case with the German embassy in Canada or with the Canadian consulate in Germany.

Once you received a work permit you may be allowed to work in all EU countries.

To get a permanent residence you need to live a couple of years in Germany.
There will be a test which need to be completed about Germany. Questions such as history, art, culture, important persons and as well a language test.

Once they launched the test a couple of years ago Germans have been asked to answer a couple of questions. Unfortunately a lot havent known the correct answers.

Hope this has been helpful.
