Hello sukhwant singh.

Welcome to Expat.com! :)

This thread will surely help you : Driving license in Malaysia.

Thank you,
Aurélie

First you will get an

International License from India itself. If you get an International Licese

you will no need to get malaysian license dude ..

thanks

hi sukhwant, firstly u can drive in malaysia with ur indian licence. i went to convert my indian licence to malaysian but got a letter from the road and transport authority that i can drive with my indian licence :-) u can also get an international licence from india but it will only b valid for a yr. if ud like to get a malaysian licence, u will have to go for driving classes. this will b a minimum of 800 myr but can go up to 2000 myr with better driving schools.

Hey All
Just my two cents on this. One of my ex-colleagues has applied for the conversion of his Indian license to Malaysian one. They have admitted his application. Now I am also gonna follow the same route. Yes we can drive on Indian License but I guess there wont be any insurance claim possible in the event of an unfortunate accident.
Correct me if I am wrong.
Will keep you guys posted on my License conversion status..
Cheers...!

cool guy, when u say "admitted", do u mean they have given him a malaysian licence?

By admitted I mean they accepted his application and asked him to wait for 30 days. I also am not sure wot will happen to his application. Has been two weeks already since he submitted his application. So I will wait for another two weeks, get my Indian license endorsed by Indian Embassy in the meantime and then follow the same route if my ex-colleague gets successful.!!
Cheers..!

ahhh ok, yes they accepted my application too :-) but after 45 days got a lovely letter in bahasa malay that i used google translate to make sense in english. this letter said my application is rejected and i can used my countrys indian licence to drive in malaysia. but good luck with your efforts, but note that u were warned :-)

Oh is it?? Thats bad news already..! But my problem is that I will get my car from my company and they wont give me a car without a valid Malaysian license.. So I will have to take the risk anyways.. So fingers crossed..! What else to do..!!
Today I have submitted my Indian License at VFS office for endorsement.
Lets see wots in the store for me.
Cheers..!

Hey Carlyle
Another thing I want to check with you is that if you are driving on your Indian License, are you still eligible to claim insurance for your car in the unfortunate event of an accident?
Cheers..!

the car dealer mentioned i could. if i couldnt, i wouldnt have bought any insurance :-) my indian driving licence is valid in malaysia and i have a letter from jpj to prove it.

i think u should apply for your licence through jpj. if it is accepted, then great :-) if it isnt like mine, then show the letter to your company and tell them that the indian licence is valid in malaysia. u should ideally get ur car then.

last alternative, go for driving classes :-)

So I guess it goes from case to case.. Coz my ex-colleague told me that him being an expat working on a Govt. project (which is same as mine) is eligible for converting his license to Malaysian one. We both are MRT specialists and been invited and sponsored by different local companies working on MRT project. Hope this helps my case too..!!

Well Carlyle.. Same thing has happened to my colleague. His application is rejected stating the reason that his work permit is only for 2 years so he can drive in Malaysia based on his Indian driving license. And gave him a latter. Just like in your case.
But I dont understand why do they have to take 30 days to reject an application.. LOL..!!
Thought I should update everybody.
So I will follow suit now. I will ask my employer to provide me a car based on my Indian License only. No need to go for Malaysian license as even my visa is valid for 2 years only.
Cheers..!

it was worth taking a shot :-) hope u get your car sorted.

You can get a conversion. Just need to pay a fee ;) Indian more expensive but doable.

some less than honest types pay the instructor to say have done lessons and get licence quickly. I stress I deplore such tactics including the 200 rm fee paid by most of my Chinese associates to get a licence on a test. Terrible practice......certainly don't do that go ahead and pay 2k for lessons and fail (they will keep doing that until you pay the fee!) honesty pays•!

•well it benefits someone lol

Thanks Nemodot for your inputs..!
Cheers..!

Just use your india driving license as long it still valid.

The good thing about getting a Malaysian Driving Licence (you keep your original one)is that if you intend to stay in Malaysia long term, the expiry of your home country does not become an issue.

Heard there is an amendement happened and now you can drive in Malaysia with Indian license (as well as with many other country license) if you have a letter from the Embessy.
Any one knows about the details?

To be honest, the system changes from month to month. There is currently a new system which allows a transfer to a Malaysian licence upon application. There used to be List A countries and List B countries.  A had an agreement for automatic transfer and B had to apply and prove the licence was authentic and then it was transferred. The cost is only about Rm 30 per year.  But you need to check out this site to see what is the current procedure:

Here is a relatively reliable translation tool:

Thanks so much Roy. The "letter" is proof that the licence is not a fake.  In some countries the government department that issues licences provides a document confirming the licence is authentic and valid.  For other countries, the embassy here will be able to provide the letter (for a fee).

India is not a bilateral country. Here is the list:

http://www.jpj.gov.my/documents/10157/6 … 138031ab82

I got the same letter as Carlyle, but another person from my country (no bilateral agreement) managed to exchange his licence, but then he is married to a Malaysian, but not sure if that was the reason.

Roy,
You are great! Many thanks for the time and efforts in translating the application. So kind of you..
Hope to meet you if you happened to be in KL. My son was in Penang last week! and he highly appraised the city and facilities...
We should plan for a visit as well.. Thanks again..

You're most welcome TS2011. Do hit me up for coffee when you are in  Penang and I'll do the same if I am at KL (most probably next month or Feb2014).

Cheers!

HI dear,

R  u sure that we can drive here with Indian LMV license, When I approached JPJ at wangsa maju. I've been directed to  convert my indian license to Malaysian license. Though I need to produce ministry of foreign affairs endorsement and submit the same to JPJ at PJ to get converted. Is that necessary?? Or i can simply hire a car and drive locally.

Planning for a trip to cameron island and passion to drive. I got both the left and right hand driving license... issued from India and Oman...

Bcoz i cant get the endorsement letter to convert into malaysian license immediately... plz advise..

1) to hire a car indian license is sufficient??
2) If i drive with indian license any chances to get caught by cops??

It is true that we can drive using Indian driving licence with the attestation from High commission . I got the JPJ letter like most of you have mentioned. Driving here for last 2 years. There are road blocks by police, traffic police and JPJ. Each time they stop, we need to explain them for 30 minutes minimum. In case if the cops on bike stops you, they are not ready to read your papers and letter from JPJ. they are adamant to see only the malaysian driving licence otherwise they are expecting some unofficial money. Main aim is to get money. I suffered a lot in the last two years. Next week going to try again in JPJ, if it fails going to take driving class, no other choice.

Just apply for a Malaysian licence again now that the new process has been released and is in force. The letters were just a holding position until agreement was reached on how existing foreign driving licences would be verified by each country in List B.

hi abu ben, not sure if its particular for puchong, but i live in kl city and have never been stopped by a cop in the last 1 and half year. maybe just pure luck. but i did break a rule once and got caught. but the cop accepted my indian licence.

Gravitas, does that mean you never had a Malaysian licence before?  I renewed mine in 2011 by going in, paying the fee and getting a new one. Mine was expired but < 3 years (if >3 years you need to reapply). Or yours had expired?

Nemo, I applied for my licence and got one of the strange letters referred to above, about 3 years ago. Last year the new process was released. DVLA provide authentication which is forwarded to JPJ, its straightforward and other Brits have already used the system and got their Malaysian Licence.

Ok I got mine in 2003 and was never asked for anything not even a work permit just british driving licence and my address in malaysia. I did go to a smaller office - a trick I worked out with banks. One may reject you another will accept you. Malaysia boleh!

What is DVLA? My expat manager's application was rejected by JPJ today. They dont accept the attestation driving license by VFS.

DVLA is the British government Agency, responsible for Driver & Vehicle Licensing. They issue and renew driving licenses and vehicle registration. The Malaysian JPJ requires proof that the driving licence is not a fake and the DVLA are responsible for issuing this proof.

Assuming Gravitas DVLA haven't lost the details - they have been in the news a lot for losing entitlements to drive!

BTW for all Brits do remember that your photo ID is only valid 10 years. When you renew you need a UK address. And technically you were supposed to surrender it anyway if you got another countries licence.

And a funny thing when I went back to UK and hired a car, on my Malaysian licence it was 35% cheaper than on a UK licence!!!!

WTF  :o

Hello Carlyle

Can you pls tell me the procedure you followed for getting letter from JPJ?

Hi,

"Indian driving licence can be used in malaysia"  I am agreed on this part but to use it it must be confirmed by the embassy of the country of origin in Malaysia, or by the authority issuing the driving license concerned.
So I went to VFS office (now its BSL) so they ask me 750RM to get it. What BSL will do
1) They will send my original driving licence to get attested by Indian High Commission and authenticated by the Consular Wing of the CPV division of MEA Delhi.
2) Then they will confirmed it from Indian embassy in malaysia.
3) Then I can use it to drive in malaysia.

Could you please suggest me an easy option?
Thanks

You can drive on your Indian driving licence, but only for 3 months. Check out the JPJ website if you dont believe this. You will see that India is on list B, which is the two phase process. First you have to get the DGs approval and then you apply for the licence at a JPJ office.

Below is the correct process that the Indian High Commission requires:

http://www.indianhighcommission.com.my/ … ml#driving

1. Photocopy of the driving license duly attested by CPV Division of Ministry of External Affairs New Delhi or its Branch Offices in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkatta or Gauhati plus one photocopy of the attested copy

2. One copy of the passport (first page, last page and current visa page).

3. The originals need to be presented for scrutiny.

4. Charges: RM 47+ RM 9.50 service fees
