Waste Management in Colombia

Hello everyone,

As an expat in Colombia, waste management can often pose challenges and requires an understanding of local standards and regulations. Understanding local practices is essential for environmental compliance and seamless integration into daily life.

Here are some points to share your experience:

How can you learn about waste management in Colombia (types of waste collected, sorting, collection days, recycling, bulky items, etc.)? Do local authorities provide information on waste management to newcomers?

What are the main differences you've noticed compared to your home country in terms of waste management? How have you adapted?

Are there recycling programs, composting initiatives, or other eco-friendly alternatives to reduce waste in Colombia? What personal initiatives can be implemented?

How are hazardous waste items such as batteries, household chemicals, or electronic equipment managed?

What actions are taken to encourage compliance with regulations (rewards, penalties, taxes, etc.)?

If you have any other relevant information to share about waste management, please do not hesitate!

Thank you for your contribution.

They have recycling bins in many locations and apartments but not always.

And there have been cases of waste management companies dumping their loads in a ravine in the country.

On the coast, and other areas plastic and other waste is handled by chucking it out the window or the side of the road. Thats why you sometimes see plastic bags stuck to the trees in those locations.

@Cheryl I have never ever heard of someone being fined for littering or dumping garbage in the country

Not individuals anyway. I am sure meduim to large companies are regulated

The Campesinos are self regulating. No one wants somebody else ruining your land.

No government or business that recycles in our little village.  Recycle bins can be seen at every food court and other self serve restuarants, and in some condo/apartment associations.

In our little village, there is one guy that collects recycle material, but the people have to take it to him.  He does get quite the loads.

As usual, Nico nailed it!!

In this area recycling is a serious business, all collected by Campesinos, and woe betide anyone who touches their rubbish. They then sort it and take it to local centers, what happens with it then is anyone's guess.
