No working and not studying! Serious article but interesting term about unemployment between age 15 and 14.
So what words make you smile or shake your head???
Not a new one but " mediopollo" meaning coffee with a little milk. I only hear it in the capital but every time I do, I think it's cute.
Never heard that one, maybe because my coffee is black!

Not a new word, but a funny little story. My first visit, my husband's family picked us up at STI. Robert (my husband) is Dominican but born in the US.
They hadn't seen him in several years. They were all talking at once, hardly stopping to breath, and I knew very little Spanish.
They all kept saying "pero, pero" over and over, interjecting the word constantly. I keep thinking, why are they all talking about dogs? How can there be this much conversation about dogs? I asked Robert and he just looked at me like I was crazy. Then he started laughing. They all got a good chuckle out of that one.

@rfmaurone - "pero" means "but" or "although", so in other words they would be saying something like "we had a good flight but (pero), the plane was totally full". Perro, on the other hand, is a dog and the emphasis on the "rr" is much stronger. I hope that makes sense. :-)

When I moved to the Dominican Republic almost 9 years ago I started making a list of unusual words and phrases. Here is about half of my list with definitions:
"Pa pola": Para después
"Pela silábica": Fuerte discusión, argumento
"Lo canalizo": Lo voy hacer
Trasnochado: Muy tarde en la noche
Remolón: Alguien que da muchas vuelta para hacer algo, o una persona que se queja cuando le mandan hacer una cosa
Camastron, haragán: Que tiene poca disposición para hacer algo
Asirimbao: "Vive en la luna", persona, distraída
"Bandsao de cosas": Muchas cosas
Turuleca: Tiene problemas de la cabeza
Baisa o Balsa: Mucho
Juyendo: Ir rapido
Fuñir: Molestar
Artura: Comer mucho
Dejuañangao: Descompuesto, mal atentido
Embromar: Molestar
"Me da 3 pitos" o flautas: Que me importa
Boche: Regañar
"Dame los cualtos": Dame el dinero
Fuetaso: alguien te dam
Ramalaso: Te golpeastes
Caterva, retahíla, vaisa: Muchas cosas
Ñoñeria: Uno mimada
Freco: Persona atrevida, arrojada, propasada
Debembao: Cuando algo pierde la forma, pierde su elasticidad

Amemao: Estado de tontedad
