Blog of the month - October 2007

Blogging Gelle
My name is Michael Carøe Andersen and I'm from the southern part of Denmark. I started a software design company with a friend of mine from Belfast a year ago. In the beginning we lived in Copenhagen, Denmark but the lease on our apartment/office was up and we decided to relocate.
Where are you living now?
Now I live in Prague, Czech Republic about 20 minutes from The Old Town and I've been here for four months and planning on staying another 8.
Have you ever lived abroad before?
I did a one year internship in Ann Arbor, Michigan as a software developer. Coming from small Denmark I have always been fascinated with the vastness of USA and while I was there for a year I got a lot of opportunities to travel both coasts of the country. Apart from travelling in USA a couple of times I've travelled in most Western European countries.
When did you decide to live abroad?
When our Danish lease was up we looked and a map and decided that Prague sounded cool so we bought a ticket and found an apartment online before we moved.
Is it your first time or are you a "serial expat"?
It's my second time living outside Denmark and I'll probably do a couple more places before I end up settling down somewhere.
Why did you choose to live in Czech Republic ?
Compared to Denmark it is a cheap place to live, the food is pretty good, nightlife is awesome and people are usually friendly.
How would you describe Prague?
Prague is a European capital with everything that comes with that. A lot of tourists and a lot of places worth being a tourist. But if you stay out of the downtown area you avoid a lot of worst and there are so many great places to hang out in Prague. There is plenty of expats that are easy to make friends with and the I've made a couple of local friends as well. My favorite.
What do you like the most about it?
Hanging out with good company at Letna Park (in Czech Letenské sady). Its a big park overlooking the old town with a huge beer garden in one end.
Do you miss anything from your homeland?
I miss having a bike and having bike lanes to use it on. I miss my friends and family but they are not that far away so its ok.
When did you start your blog?
I started blogging on Blogging Gelle in April 2005. I moved to US and wanted to keep my Danish friends and family updated so I started out blogging in Danish and switched to English when I moved back home.
I spend a lot of time thinking - I should blog about this - but its far from everything that gets from my head to my blog.
Did you make new friends with your blog?
Yes I went to bloggerdinner ( http://blogging.gelle.dk/2006/08/19/metablogging/) with a lot of people I had never met when I moved to Copenhagen. And I've met some Danish bloggers in Prague ( http://blogging.gelle.dk/2007/07/30/danish-bloggers-in-prague/). Apart from that I've made some bloggerfriends that I haven't met in real life.
What do you think of expat-blog.com?
It wasn't too long ago I registered when I came across the site by chance. I've realized that expat-blogs is a very good place to start to learn about a different city or country so I follow expat blogs in Copenhagen and Prague right now as well as read up on blogs about destinations I'm going to or are interested in
