I am not sure if you are looking for long or short term accomodations but generally the further out of the city the cheaper it will be. Lots of great places to stay in the suburbs at reasonable prices, however youll either want to have a car or be close to transit.

There's a lot of houses in suburb that rented out their spare room or basement for a cheap prices. Some houses has basement with two rooms, if you can trust people easily you can find someone to share the whole basement. Toronto has a decent public transit and its cheap, you can buy one card to use up for one month either using the  bus or train.
