Salary standards for expat

Dear all,

I am having a job offer in jakarta, and the company is ready to pay the salary in US dollars,  how much is required to be negotiated for  the salary part, so as  to live a comfortable living  plus monthly savings.
I am from India.

Expat salaries vary from 5 million (enough to live on if you don't go out much) to telephone numbers allowing you to do whatever you wish.
A good lifestyle is very easy on 20 million/month.

hey, I have some friends doing IT also from Hyderabad. Basically Indian will not go out much (for food and for clubbing). 300usd is enough to live. Alcohol here is pretty ripped off, so if you are a drinker and want to do clubbing during weekends, then it will be around 3000usd / month (assuming accommodations and travel expenses are paid by company). So if you want some savings, then you should ask for 5000-6000 usd / month as minimum.

I think I'm turning all communist because I read that and felt sick.
US$ 3,000 is Rp 28.5 million, give or take.
I know families that live on Rp200,000/month and lots more on Rp400,000/month.
I get a very nice remuneration but I save loads and spread a bit around people who aren't as lucky as I am.
I believe I'd be very foolish to spend 28 million on getting drunk and wasting it on loose women.

Hey Fred,
Should not talking about communist.

Not spending does not mean you are not foolish.. it just means you are cheap.

He is asking for an expat life, not a local life. As an expat, you have to pay around 1000usd to have a place to stay (most of the time the company will pay for this). Expat has to pay twice (triple) the amount that the local usually pays for everything (even ojek, local guys only pay 1 usd, expat has to pay 2 usd at least).

I believe most of the expat working here get paid more than 3000 usd / month. If less than that, they rather just stay at home, building up their country!

Rdeshpa, i think you should negotiate from above 3000usd with accommodation and travel expenses. If possible, you should also ask for health insurance. Another thing you may want to consider in negotiation is the flight back schedule. (once per 3 months or once per 6 months). I'm sure you will get homesick very soon.

I've heard this many times but disagree with it.

First up. I'm from a place called Yorkshire. We aren't known for wasting money and that sort of stuck with me.
That's not to say I don't spend, I do, but never waste.
In my humble opinion, spending on booze and gold digging ladies (as so many expats do) is a rare old waste of time and money.
Of course, it's up to them but you won't catch me doing either.

I do stay at home more than many but that's because I'm a married chap and it would be unfair of me to wander out without my wife and daughter.
As for "building up my country", you may like to explain what that means.

I rent a house in a guarded estate at Rp21 million/year. Nice house with three bedrooms and a maid's room. I pay the same as locals do.
I allow myself to get overcharge by people who need the cash.
If they're over cheeky, they get a verbal finger's worth and I don't bother with them. One ice cream seller wanted Rp17,000 for what cost Rp3,000 in Alphmart. I simple said "Thank you" and walked away without buying.
The expats who get ripped off all the time are just foolish.

There's a big difference between getting ripped off and allowing a little extra to someone less well off than I am.

Time for breakfast. I'll be having bubur ayam at Rp6,000/portion, not McD's at Rp35,000 or more.

Yup... we are looking in different life standard. You are from a cheap city in UK, and you move to Indonesia without a job on hand to negotiate.
Normally, if we work as an expat, we should be some kinds of specialist, so that the companies are willing to pay more. We all have an apartment around 100 million / year.
But i think you are too old to get some kind of skill set to earn that much. That's why you are very active in this Expat.com (with more than thousand posts).

You can't make that much, it does not mean that some people does not deserve that much to negotiate.

You can enjoy a 6k bubur ayam, simple because you can't afford for a 100k sharkfin soup.

But anyway, this thread is for the Hyderabad guy to know how much he should negotiate, not how pathetic your living standard is.

I would not start this if you not start with your stupid communist things.

I can afford Rp100,000 shark fin soup but I refuse to eat it because I find the animal abuse repulsive.
I rather like the bubur.
Perhaps a better example would be biscuits. I've just watched an expat buy very expensive foreign biscuits but, only a shelf away, a local version that tastes exactly the same but cost 10 times less.
As for your abusive comments, they don't help much.

The housing at 100 million. You're totally wrong.
Some do, most don't.

Hi,

Basically its depends on your skill set and your habit. I cant assure the pay of other expat marking. But most of indian here earning from 1500 USD to 7000 USD per month. I even heard some of managers in mining earning more than that.

Related to spending its all about what kind of accommodation you are going to stay etc., Some of my friends staying in Taman Rasuna which cost 7Million rp for one month (for 3 BHK). You can even stay in kost for 500K rp. Its all depends on your life style and adjustment. Most of them rent 3 BHK then they share the room since they are bachelour. Hope it helps.

I've been drafting employment contract for expats for many years, and usually my clients offer 2000 - 3000 USD, and none of the expats rejected the offer

I do agree with this, Most of expat will fall under this category

@rdeshpa

I think minimum 1500 USD will be required for family of 2-3 (Home in Indian society and Indian groceries) these exclude school fee (good school cost you around 5-6K USD per annum) and Hospital visits (quite expensive), Travelling to India...
above that will be your saving!!!!!

@ rahbansal > Thank you for these information. However, i would like to inform you that this thread is very old (2012). :)

Thanks
