What area are you moving to? I live in Southern California. The quality of public schools vary from ditrict to district and even within districts. It is the same with private schools. For public schools you can look at API (Academic Performance Index) scores. A word of caution - great scores don't guarantee a great fit. California has something called California Standards which is a controversial and oft debated set of basic standards for academic performance in grades K-12. Therefore, a school that teaches to "the standards" might have students that are great test takers but may not necessarily be the best learning environment.
