Re: Are You An Expat?
I'm living in a foreign country temporarily. I don't know how long I'll stay here or when I'll go back home. However people want to label me I'm doing ok.

Re: Are You An Expat?
No worries if people Label you, have faith in yourself, what is life without adventure, Life is too short to worry about what people may think, as long as you harm no one . It's your life and your adventure, Life is a choice not a chore live it to the fullest of your liking, there is no other way. Life is a personal experience let no one take that from you.

Re: Are You An Expat?
Why is it necessary to "renounce" one's home country? Can't you be an expat just by taking up permanent residence in another country? Is that the same thing?

Re: Are You An Expat?
Hi,
Greetings to all !
I have recently joined the site. I am from India and hoping to work in Kuwait.
The job in a hotel that i have been offered gives me an accommodation with meals when i am on shift + free transport. The salary is 1300 USD. Is it enough ?
I understand spending or not spending is up to me but still curious to know if the amount is enough to have good and simple life there.
Thanks
Anupam

Re: Are You An Expat?
Just new as an expat... And its Great!! Lol
The bad thing that being an expat even with lots of extra benefits still you are away from your family.
But if you are not a family person perhaps its not a big problem, but for me, yup its kind a problem...and I always flying back home every month at least to see my big family.
Dont know how long will stand with this situation but so far I just try to enjoying being an Expat

Re: Are You An Expat?
I believe "ex-pat" stand for and used for ppl who have already obtained a citizenship of a country other than their country of birth, and or they no longer want to go back to their original country.
think of these words; "Ex- husband", "Ex-wife" "Ex-life" etc..
where "Ex-" refers to a total disconnect from someone or something" in the past.. but then again English is a stupid language...j/k!

Hi usp, I think instead of saying stupid some respect to the widely populer language can be maintained by calling it a funny language.

Re: Are You An Expat?
I am an Expat. Often being an Expat it is hard to define who we are in terms of where we belong and who we are. For example I feel at home in a country where I don't speak the language. To them I am a foreigner but actually for me its my home.
I am currently carrying out research looking at the effects of group identification on our health in Expat communities.
Please find the link below:
Do you have five minutes to spare? Please complete this study in order to help carry out research! One participant will be picked at random to win a £20 Amazon voucher! Re: Are You An Expat?
Interesting, so there is a "learning curve" or education.
Like a toddle becomes a grown up (most of the times) one may start as a fairly ignorant expat (parachuted into a position and life) and may elect to become an immigrant, after which follows what?
I think I'm now a reasonably matured European. Grown up & educated in Germany, worked, expatriated and immigrated to various European countries and having travelled a lot, I now have a "European" lifestyle.

Re: Are You An Expat?
So, "ex-patriate" mean "out of his/her homeland", and if one intends to make the new place home, one becomes "immigrant"?
What about me:
I felt at home wherever I stayed so far, but don't necessarily intend to return or stay in one place forever. I also often wonder how people can take the idea seriously than virtual lines drawn in the sand and called borders make a difference ( to me they don't!). I call myself world citizen, but maybe impatriate is a more appropriate word? Or maybe I am just confused? In any case, I like it that way!
Are there others like me around?

Where is this mystical place called "Overseas"?
I traveled all around the world, but wherever I went people told me that "Overseas" is somewhere else.

I'm from the west, but living and working in the East. However, if I keep travelling East, eventually I'll end up back where I started from.
Life, like the world, is a circle and not linear. Home is where you are and life is what you make it

I agree with you. When you say "expat" there are no salary requirements or living set-up, for that matter.

Re: Are You An Expat?
I was living in Spain seven years ago. All the German typical food was missing in that time so that I became really oversized... Today it is a little better and I am missing the feeling being an expat, because for me personally it was exciting..

I moved east for work but I can't think of a time when I have been called an expat by anyone. Other names or labels, yes most certainly.

Re: Are You An Expat?
in some countries expat considered as a work machine who should always work and work with no complains whatever. again in some other countries expat has the full respect as a person who is available to provide his efforts and know-how to locals based on respect and honesty of both parties. Expat wherever he is, part of his soul still in his home country and the other part living a wonderful moments in the multicultural society of different expats in the place he lives in.
