Does a late harvest affect German wine taste?
In recent times, a method of making wines has emerged that is very different to how wines have been historically made. The wines making process includes harvesting the grapes when they are ripe. The grapes are then crushed to gather the grape juice and this is further processed and converted to wine. This is how German wines and wines all over the world have been made historically. This method has been prevalent in almost all the wine producing countries of the world.
In recent times, however, there is a new method being used. This method has specially gained good ground in the countries which have colder, drier climates like Germany and Hungary. Under this method. Grapes are not harvested till they are ripe. The grapes are allowed to ripe a bit further. The cold climate in these countries causes the grapes to harden and shrivel, causing them to lose all their water content. Te grapes thus harvested are very sweet as the sugar portion in the grape now becomes concentrated. This is because the water in the grape, that was earlier a diluting factor, dries, leaving behind a sweeter, stronger tasting grape. German wine has been produced using this method. German wines produced using this method have been regarded as being the best in the world.
There have been industries producing wine in Germany that have shifted entirely to this method of making the spirit. The wines made using this method are very sweet and strong to taste, giving them a distinctly German flavor. Wines produced using this method have been steadily replacing the wines produced using he historic methods, specially in Germany.
