Architect wants to meet others passionate about Balinese architecture

Hello.

I'm coming from Sydney in June/July to investigate retirement options in Bali (after being a frequent  visitor over the years).

Initially staying only short term (have rented a house in Sanur) so I can narrow down my choices of where to live and find out what it might all cost. At the moment favouring somewhere up around Ubud but want to avoid areas that have been over-run by tourists (especially the Kuta-Seminyak strip and down town Ubud).

Still need to be near some western conveniences - restaurants, cafes, fresh food markets etc - and also would like to know there are other expats nearby but do not want to live in an expat enclave. I'm coming to live because I like Balinese communities and want to feel part of one.
I don't see myself living in glorious isolation out in the rice fields, no matter how fabulous the villas might be.

I love the traditional timber framed balinese pavilion house so will be keeping my eye out for one to rent long term or possibly buy on lease-hold.

Happy to hear from anyone who is hospitable to strangers and can help me avoid the pitfalls.
Keen to meet other architects who have a passion for both the traditional and new architecture in Bali - and have a common passion for a wonderful part of the world.

Hope to hear from anyone who shares similar interests.

I'm single (recently separated) and gay but that has nothing to do with my decision to retire in Bali. It's the life style and the richness of the Balinese culture that attracts me. I've got no ulterior motives.

Hi Noel,

Welcome, our history is very similar check out my Profile, It sounds like you have good knowledge of Bali & have also done much research.

On the question of wooden houses, you can now select & buy various styles of wooden houses have them dismantled and brought down to Bali from various places in Java. In my opinion Its a great option. You could expect A total cost of Rp250,000,000 Max plus lease a plot of land of your choosing This method saves many pitfalls with ownership of land
The timbers used are fabulous 20"Ironwood beams or bigger. With Teakwood also used.

On the question of location try Jimbaran, I choose to live there as i find it nicely local, but at the same time you can get all an expat could want.
Best wishes  Howard
