Getting married in Canada

Hi all,

We invite all the ones who got married in Canada or who are about to get married in Canada to participate in this thread smile

What are the formalities to get married in Canada? Is it the same for a couple of foreigners of for a mixed couple (between a foreigner and a native of Canada)?

Are the procedures complicated?

How long does it take to carry out all the formalities?

Thank you in advance for participating,

Armand

Re: Getting married in Canada

I will answer your query even though I am in neither category but hope to  meet someone soon :-).

First of all, you need to obtain a marriage licence and a registration of marriage. This service is provided by each provincial authority.

So if say you are in Alberta, you will need to contact a registry agent. Follow the link below for Alberta:
http://www.servicealberta.ca/542.cfm

And follow the link below to choose the province you want to get married in:

Have a happy marriage!

Re: Getting married in Canada

Hi mandiebraxton
Nice informations from you but still need some help concerning wedding laws and regulations information in Alberta.
My sister planned to wed someone in Alberta and want  to know the process for  legal wedding in Alberta.
Also if she gets married from her native country … does she need to produce some documents or registration formality to be legally recognized as a Canadian citizen ?

How does she obtain these two certificate listed hereunder from a registry agents to get approval for her marriage in Canada
(1) Marriage License
(2) Registration of Marriage

Re: Getting married in Canada

Are both couple Canadian citizens.
If she gets married in her native country (via marriage registry), that will be recognised in Canada. She does not need to get married  in Canada as well.

There is a list of agencies which perform various registry tasks, be it motor, health, marriage

I will suggest your sister contact an officiant on the list below
