Cost of living in the British virgin islands

Hi everybody,

It would be very useful to talk about the cost of living in the British virgin islands.

Don't forget to mention where in the British virgin islands you are living.

How much does it cost to live in the British virgin islands?

> accommodation prices

> public transportation fares (tube, bus etc ...)

> food prices(per month, how much does it cost you?)

> health prices (for those who need medical insurance)

> eduction prices (if you need to pay)

> energy prices (oil, electricity)

> common bills (Internet, television, telephone, mobile phone)

> prices of a good menu in a traditional restaurant

> prices of a beer and or a coffee in a regular pub

> price of the cinema

Do not hesitate to add items to this list!

Thanks in advance for your participation!!

I lived on Tortola until Nov. 07 and here are a few prices:

Accomodation: 2,000$ for a 2 bedroom apartment
Gas: 75$ a bottle (big)
Car rental: around 500$ per month
Beer: 3$ or 2$ at happy hour.  Alcohol is very cheap, cheaper than duty free.
Good menu: 100$ for 2 with a bottle of wine
Electricity: 150$ per month, without A/C
Internet: 100$ per month
Cable: 63$ per month
Most apartments come fully furnished.
No public transportation, or very unfrequent and limited.
I believe that Cedar School costs about 10,000$ per year per kid.

I've been living in the BVI for 10 yrs.
2-bedroom condo rent $1200/month, unfurnished because we have all our own stuff.
Current gasoline per gal $5.10.
Having coffee out...don't bother, most places don't have good coffee!  I have my own espresso-maker, & I buy whole bean coffee stateside or St. Thomas.
Beer, wine, liquor very inexpensive at restaurants & grocery stores/wholesalers.
100 lb propane tank refill is $90-something, as of last week.  Electric bill using a/c, $450 per month recently.  Without a/c last month was $183.  The power goes out a lot, but bill doesn't seem to reflect that.
Most homes use cistern water, free.
Price at cinema?  No cinema here anymore...a "multi-plex" cinema is in the works, supposed to open in 2006, but still waiting...
Internet varies, but we pay $99/mo. to Cable & Wireless, although service hasn't been reliable lately.  CCT Boatphone offers wireless cards, price varies.
US mailing address w/ courier service, plus local mailbox, $360 annually.
Customs duty up to 20% for toiletries, clothing, household.
Grocery prices are high...example, fresh milk at $12/gal recently, Tropicana orange juice, $14/carton.
Health insurance reasonable (compared to US).  We paid $250/mo for a group plan...now no group, and we pay $360/mo.
Perhaps prices of goods & fuel will drop somewhat, as oil prices continue dropping...

hi guys,

i have recently gotten an offer to work in Tortola.  I would really appreciate inputs about cost of living there like monthly expenses for gasoline, electricity and cable and wireless etc..  also, what range of salary would give a comfortable enough living there?

I am currently based here in providenciales..

Thanks!
