Pregnancy in Nepal

Hi,

could you please share advice and tips about pregnancy in Nepal?

Who are the best gynecologists for pregnancy follow-ups?

Which hospitals or clinics would you recommend to give birth in Nepal?

Thanks a lot for your advice smile

Christine

Re: Pregnancy in Nepal

Nepal is very short on trained midwives, however I have worked with medical staff in Nepal and from what I have been told the big hospital in Kathmandu is reliable for births, but I would not go anywhere else in the country if I were pregnant.

I worked in a rural hospital and they celebrated once, as BOTH the women and child survived a birth.  This is pretty worrying.

Re: Pregnancy in Nepal

Hi Christine!

I would suggest you try Dr. Supatra Koirala at Ciwec Clinic in Lazimpat, Kathmandu for pregnancy follow-ups. Dr. Koirala can be found at Ciwec, which is a clinic catering to the community of expats and travelers. She has been my gyno for sometime and she is great!

For delivery, I suggest you go to Norvic Hospital in Thapathali, Kathmandu. That is the only hospital I would consider going to in Nepal for delivery and in that process would feel well taken care of.

Dial 197 for inquiry to obtain numbers for these clinics and other stuff.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Re: Pregnancy in Nepal

Hi Christine,

I am also a pregnant woman in Nepal. I am also seeing Dr Koirala at Ciwec and I am very happy with her and the clinic.

However, when we came to Kathmandu and were already planning the pregnancy, I had a look at Norvic Hospital. The staff are very nice but it is (unlike Ciwec) a very "nepali" hospital. I had a prophylactic examination there and the Dr. advised me to get an ultrasound of the pelvis, my regular pap smear and a blood test. They do not have the equipment to do those things at Norvic, which really surprised me!

However, I was still thinking about delivery in Nepal and considering Norvic, although Dr Koirala is practicing also at Om for deliveries and I feel really comfortable with her. What worries me though is that they do need certain equipment also at the delivery, right? To measure the heart beat and that? So I do not know if they have that at Norvic or Om.

Dr Koirala advised me strongly to go away for delivery and offered to give me a pass for the flight about 2 or 3 weeks before the delivery date (being away from Nepal for very long, like 2 months before delivery date as they say it is the last time you are allowed to fly worried me too much - we have a home and pets and I didn't want to leave them for such a long time) to fly out to Bangkok. When the baby is about one week old, you can already fly back.

My baby is due at the end of February and I think we will go for that Bangkok option.

I know my reply is very late, and maybe, Christine, you already have your baby. But maybe my reply is helping other ladies and maybe Christine, you can also share your experiences?

Re: Pregnancy in Nepal

All the expats we know who have been pregnant in Nepal have left the country to give birth - mostly to Bangkok.  I have also talked to a woman from Sweden who is working with the government midwifery training programs and based on what she has seen of the health care around pregnancy and childbirth she recommended delivering in another country.
