moving to india????

Hi,

My husband was just offered a pilot job to India for a year renewable??
We have a 5 year old daughter and two cats and have an ok life in California right now.
The offer sounds great, a nice salary with housing and extra food money per month.
I guess our biggest question is : Do we really want to move the whole family to a country that we don't know for 1 year pending for a renewable contract?????????????

Please any advice would help!

Thanks,

ps : we don't know which city yet.

Re: moving to india????

Hi smile I saw your post on the forum and since I had followed my husband for 6 months to India for his job I thought that I could help a bit. We stayed in Bangalore, and if you do end up getting Bangalore then it would be good to join the Overseas Womens Club (OWC). They meet every thursday for coffee and there are a lot of Americans. This is their website : owcbangalore.org/moving.html
Join an expat group asap, so that when you need to know what to buy from where, you can always get a trusted opinion from the expats living there.

There are many factors to consider as you have mentioned, especially since you will be moving with a kid. The best option is to start looking for international schools for your kid, most of the big cities like Mumbai, Bangalore have them.

The offer sounds good, I hope that the offer also includes a car which will be provided by the company. You might also want to consider hiring a car & driver for yourself as well, if you decide not to share it with your husband. Trust me, you will need one when in India. It gives you complete mobility, and you won't have to fuss around with those pesty rickshaw drivers. And since you have a kid, it will be great to have the car & driver. I can recommend you that. There are so many reasons for the car, inclusive of your own personal safety and reliability.

One of the most important aspect is hygiene and food. To be honest, the hygiene level is not top class. So remember a basic hygiene kit always - anti-bacterial gels...etc. It is easy to get sick there, so do take caution. But with that said, there are great restaurants there which are fantastic. Do consider buying the Lonely planet - we relied on that quite a bit when traveling in India.

I think I have to stop now, but I have a lot more to tell you - if you want to know more. There are its plus and minus but all in all it would be a fantastic opportunity for you and your family to live there.

big_smile

Re: moving to india????

why a pilot has to stay in Bhubaneswar?
Bhubaneswar is culturally active and is capital city for state of orissa. Many good things to see for a person intrested in hinduism.
But certainly not for a person who wants city life. I would say.. choose metros Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai and city-Pune..

Re: moving to india????

My husband have to work for a company based in bhubaneswar that is why we would have to move over there.
We don't really mind about the fact that it is not a big city, we are not big city people anyway as long as they have some kinds of schools, parks, stores ...etc.
I understand there is a beach not far away (Puri)??
We are not indian and are a little concerned about that....

Thanks

Re: moving to india????

I would NOT advise you to move to Bhubaneswar without having been to the place, especially since you are moving with a kid. The city is a relatively small place and you will not find excellent amenities and infrastructure there. Also, being someone who has traveled around US quite a bit, small cities in US and India are completely different. As I understand, the expat community is not really big there, so you might have concerns on that front as well.

Most people who move to India have a HUGE cultural shock when they move here, no matter how many other countries they've lived in before. This is when they move to bigger cities in India. I would not recommend moving to Bhubaneswar unless you've spoken to another expat who has lived there. Personally, I would also do research on schools for your daughter.

I would advise you to contact Sharell at www.whiteindianhousewife.com. She is an Australian girl who has lived in different parts of India and knows a lot of expats. She is usually very helpful and may be able to put you in touch with someone.
