Car Insurance in PR

We're looking at a move from Minnesota to PR in the next year or so, and are gathering information at this point. I was wondering about car insurance.

Are there national insurers there, like Geico? Could you folks recommend insurance companies that might help with the transition from Minnesota to PR.

Thanks in advance,
Colleen

Don't know exactly what kind of insurance you might need but I'll give you my limited experience so far. I bought a used car here. You can get your liability insurance and your registration done at the same time it's called marbete. You pay $174 for the year and that covers your registration and liability ins. When yo buy a used vehicle from somebody, their marbete passes on to you. If they have 5 months left on their ins. it automatically transfers to you when you register the car. Any other kind of ins. I have no experience with yet.

If you want full-coverage car insurance, I'd go with Seguros Multiples. For a vehicle worth approximately $8k, expect to pay around $750 for the year. They provide 24 hour roadside assistance throughout the island (not sure about Culebra and Vieques).

One caveat: you have to pay it up-front or enter into a debtor-creditor relationship with a third-party company used by SM for monthly payments (I think a 3 or 6 month payment plan is standard - I do not think you can stretch it over the course of the entire year. Besides, the longer the payment plan, the higher the interest.)

Good luck witht the move!
